Another candidate has announced that she may have trouble getting to some of the candidate forums. Debbie Nuss, candidate for city commission has announced that she has had an accident, and has broken her ankle. However, she is continuing her campaign. Her injury, which will require surgery, may limit her ability to make public appearances, including the forums. Nuss will attend forums and other public events as she is able.

The Riley County Falcons and Wamego girl’s basketball teams have both made it through tough sub state brackets to reach their respective state tournaments beginning later this week. Riley County beat Osage City, Council Grove and Silver Lake to win a 3A sub state championship. The Lady Falcons (17-5) are the seven seed in the 3A state tournament and they will play the number two seed Garden Plain (22-1) on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Hutchinson at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Rodney McGruder’s three-point basket as time ran out gave 13th-ranked Kansas State a thrilling and dramatic 64-61 victory over a scrappy Baylor team before a stunned crowd Saturday night at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. McGruder’s game-winner culminated a series of bizarre events that surrounded the end of a game that seemed certain to head to overtime. Nate Williams threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball and the K-State baseball team claimed their home opener from Oakland 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.  Williams (2-1) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the sixth inning, when third baseman Mike Carson knocked in the Golden Grizzlies’ first run.  Oakland would score an unearned run off Williams in the 8th inning, keyed by a K-State error to lead off the inning.  Tanner Witt struck out two in the top of the ninth to nail down his second save. Brittany Chambers made her final regular season home game count at a time the Kansas State Women’s Basketball team really needed it as she poured in 31 points to lead the Wildcats to a 68-62 victory over Texas Tech before a Senior Day crowd of 3,601 Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. Chambers and Mariah White, the only two seniors on the squad were playing at Bramlage Coliseum likely for the final time in their careers. The Manhattan Library Association held its annual book sale this past weekend and people from all over Manhattan and the surrounding areas flocked to the Manhattan public library in search of a good book. Over 100,000 books, DVDs, and even magazines were available for a very reasonable price. It was not uncommon for people to be carrying large boxes of books they had purchased out of the library. Taxes, budget cuts and sequestration seemed to be the main topics discussed during Saturday morning’s Legislative Coffee. Representative of the 66th District, Sydney Carlin was the first to share her concerns and thoughts on some of the current issues.  Carlin mentioned, tax revenues are down from where they should have been at the end of February.  Taxes are down $33 million, and the sales tax is down $800,000 in particular.  Carlin also commented on the home mortgage negotiation, calling it a “disturbing trend” that is coming into the tax policy involving “tweeking” home mortgages.
