TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas House committee is considering a bill that would let professional associations approach teachers and public school staff who might be interested in their services. Kansas law now requires districts to grant full access to teachers only to the designated “professional education organization” that negotiates teachers’ contracts. The executive director of the Kansas Association of American Educators testified for the bill Monday before the House Education Committee. (AP) The Wall Street Journal has released documents casting doubt on the accuracy of events portrayed in Truman Capote’s book recounting the 1959 murders of the Clutter family in southwest Kansas. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the documents a Kansas Bureau of Investigation report question the timeline of the investigation into the four murders in Holcomb. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Johnson County businessman says he will seek the 2014 Democratic nomination for Kansas secretary of state in an attempt to unseat Republican incumbent Kris Kobach. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Randy Rolston of Mission Hills issued a news release saying he aspires to become only the second Democrat ever elected to the secretary post in Kansas. Rolston graduated from the University of Kansas and is president and co-founder of Victorian Trading Co., a Lenexa-based mail-order company. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A newspaper’s review of Kansas prison records has found 19 inmates serving life sentences for first-degree murder have been paroled over the past three years after spending an average of 23.8 years in custody. The Wichita Eagle reports the paroled inmates range in age from 35 to 92 and were convicted of killing 21 people between 1979 and 1995. Most were serving life sentences that made them eligible for parole after 15 years. LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) A southwest Kansas man has pleaded no-contest to three counts of attempted second-degree murder alleging he tried to kill his three children by slitting their throats. The Hutchinson News reports Irineo Garcia entered his plea Monday during a pretrial hearing and is scheduled for sentencing March 22. The Liberal man initially was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder for trying to kill his children, ages 5, 6 and 7, on Oct. 18, 2010, at his home. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The number of elderly homeless people in Wichita continues to climb as the economy sends them to local shelters seeking refuge. Sandy Swank of Inter-Faith Ministries says the organization’s winter shelter has served 13 people over the age of 62 so far this year after helping only five in 2012. In many cases a spouse has died and left a mountain of debt that overwhelmed the survivor. Tom Abbott, representing Wells Landing LLC, applied with Riley County Planning and Development to rezone a 25 acre tract of land. This request for rezoning was discussed during Monday’s County Commission meeting. County Planner, Bob Isaac presented various pictures, maps and facts about the land. The site is located northwest of the Anderson Avenue and Scenic Drive intersection, on the north side of Anderson Avenue. The request involved splitting the land into four lots. Two businesses in Aggieville suffered damage to property over the weekend. The first incident took place around 1:00 Saturday morning. A bathroom sink at Jimmy John’s was damaged, with an estimated total loss of $1,000 Also, at around 2:30 the same morning, Wahoo Fire and Ice Grill reported that one of the windows of their resturant had been damaged.
