WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A federal judge has scheduled a September trial for a Canadian man found in Michigan with a 12-year-old Kansas girl he met on the Internet. Stewart Kenneth Cody McGill of Bewdley, Ontario, has already waived a detention hearing and will remain in custody until his trial. He’s charged with transporting a minor out of state to have sex. U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten on Wednesday set a Sept. 25 trial date. Authorities say McGill traveled in late May to the south-central Kansas town of El Dorado to meet the girl. The season opener is just under a month away, so the K-State football reported for fall camp on Wednesday.  The Cats will take the practice field for the first time Thursday after winning 10 games and earning a Cotton Bowl berth a year ago.  K-State returns 17 starters – the most since 2006 – and 42 total lettermen from last year’s squad.  Of the 17 starters back, eight are on offense and six are on defense, while K-State also sees its kicker, punter and long snapper all return for 2012.  K-State makes their season debut on Saturday, September 1st against Missouri State…

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP)   The Arizona Cardinals have signed former K-State running back Thomas Clayton.  Clayton appeared in three games with the Cleveland Browns last season. In 2010, he played in one game for New England and two with the Browns.  In his entire NFL career, Clayton has 15 carries for 29 yards.

The Manhattan Manko Senior 17’ers looked to be right at home on Wednesday night in the American Legion “AAA” State Tournament as they routed the Easton Outlaws 20-1 at Tointon Family Stadium.  Manko will play Pittsburg on Thursday night in the winners’ bracket semis at 8:00pm, who beat Leavenworth 17-1.  In the upper half of the bracket, Newton defeated Salina 10-3 and Hays slipped past Winfield 7-6.  Two elimination games are slated to be played Thursday morning at K-State, with the winners’ bracket tilts will be Thursday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Luis Mendoza pitched into the eighth inning, Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson stroked two hits each and drove in a run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2 on Wednesday night.  The Royals, who have the worst record in the American League (42-61), won consecutive games for the first time since June 27-29.  Mendoza (5-7) limited the Indians to two runs and four hits, only one after the fourth inning, and went 7 1-3 innings to pick up the victory.  Mendoza, who was 1-3 in his four previous starts, did not throw…

(AP)   Little-used forward Kyle Miller scored a fluke stoppage-time goal in his first start for Sporting Kansas City, salvaging a 1-1 draw against English side Stoke City FC in an international exhibition on Wednesday night.  Miller, who played his high school and college soccer in the Kansas City area, deflected a clearance attempt by Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic into an empty net in the second minute of added time.  Sporting, which fielded a reserve-heavy lineup on Wednesday night, is 0-1-3 in international friendlies since the team renamed itself from the Wizards before the 2011 season.  Stoke…

Allison Schmitt pushed the United States in front in the anchor leg to win the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the London Olympics on Wednesday.  The Americans, whose team included Shannon Vreeland, a 2010 Blue Valley West grad and university of Georgia swimmer, Missy Franklin and Dana Vollmer, clocked an Olympic-record 7 minutes, 42.92 seconds. It’s the first Olympic gold medal for Vreeland, while Schmitt, Franklin and Vollmer have all won individual gold in London.   Australia led by a half-second entering the anchor leg but had to settle for silver.  France touched third for the bronze.

A draft of the Inter-local Agreement for the Quarter Cent Sales Tax was originally one of the topics for Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting. However, the plan to do so was changed before the meeting as county officials received feedback Tuesday from the Kansas Attorney General’s office regarding questions that had been sent to the office in March on the topic of the quarter cent sales tax.
