Functioning as the Board of County Health, the Riley County commission on Monday unanimously approved both personnel requests from health department administrator Julie Gibbs. The county will use opioid settlement money to fund the community health educator through 2025. A portion of Casement Road closed for repairs Monday while southern access to North Martin Luther King Dr. Drive reopened to traffic. The Manhattan street division shut down Casement Road between Allen Road and Dix Drive for concrete panel replacement, and officials expect the closure to remain in place until at least July 26, depending on the weather. Only local traffic will be able to enter the construction area. Through traffic on Casement Road should divert to Tuttle Creek Boulevard on Allen Road from the north or Casement Road from the south. Details of the budget had been ironed out during a work session the previous week. For the first time since 2010, the county will see a decrease in assessed valuation. That valuation is determined by real property values, personal property values, and state assessed utilities. Plans to open a Hawaiian Bros restaurant may be back on track. Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, Kansas City, Mo.-based chain, submitted plans to the Manhattan city government to open in the former Panera Bread building at 325 E. Poyntz Ave. in 2022. Since then, the building has sat vacant with no visible changes. But passersby last week noticed a “coming soon” sign in front of the building. The sign also said, “Apply at workathbros.com.” The site had a button for a Manhattan location, but no jobs were listed as of Monday morning. There were no reported injuries Monday morning after an apartment building caught fire on the southwest side of town. Just before 7 am., the report of a structure fire in the 2500 block of Stagg Hill Rd. came in, and 17 Manhattan Fire Department firefighters responded. Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming out of the top floor of the three-story, 12-unit building. They searched the building and extinguished the fire within 15 minutes.
