Kansas Governor Laura Kelly froze tuition increases in 2022, but without any word from the governor about a freeze for the coming school year, many university officials have indicated tuition rates will increase state-wide. K-State President Dr. Richard Linton testified before the House Higher Education Budget Committee on February 16th and said tuition rates will likely increase by approximately 3%. (AP) — Kansas’ ethics commission has been investigating Republican campaign activities for at least a year, and the GOP-controlled Legislature is moving to reduce the agency’s power and legalize practices apparently under scrutiny. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Conservative Kansas lawmakers pushed ahead Tuesday with trying to eliminate most ballot drop boxes in elections, despite a split among top Republicans that could doom the conspiracy-driven effort. A Kansas Senate committee voted 5-4 to approve a bill that would limit each of the state’s 105 counties to only one drop box, only inside its election office and only when two people from different political parties are constantly monitoring the box. GODDARD, Kan. (AP) — A Goddard police officer shot and killed a man after he refused numerous orders to drop a weapon and began walking toward the officer with a weapon that was later determined to be a replica BB gun, authorities said. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said 39-year-old Michael James Trask, of Lake Afton, died in the shooting near Goddard on Tuesday. At their meeting Tuesday, the Manhattan City Commission approved the first reading of an annexation ordinance to acquire a 78.73 acre piece of land west of the Manhattan Regional Airport for eventual commercial development. The land currently borders the Random Woods residential neighborhood. Multiple residents voiced their concerns and frustration to the board concerning the ambiguous description of what will be built on the land.
