Manhattan is quickly becoming a haven for bio-science research, and that aim was put forward a little further last night at the Manhattan City Commission meeting. An Indian company, Pratistha International came forward for a second consideration, applying for economic development funds to set up a Manhattan-based arm of their company. The proposal, which passed unanimously, will allow Pratistha to set up a research facility in an old armory building near Manhattan Regional Airport. Monday evening Daniel Brewer was sentenced to two concurrent prison terms of 12 to 20 years for two rapes that occurred  in 1981.  On Tuesday Morning Brewer defense attorney Larry McRell filed a motion for probation and or downward modification of the two prison sentences. McRell states in the motion that  it is consistent with the plea agreement reached between Brewer and the state among other reasons.  The motion goes on to state that prosecutor Christine Ladner acknowledged that the office of the Kansas State Attorney General believed suspending the sentence was in the best interest of the state, the…

Micheal Blake Layne appeared by video from Riley County jail in Riley County District court Tuesday afternoon to set a preliminary court date. 19 year old Layne is charged with the 1st degree murder of 31 year old Steve R. Freel, and is scheduled to appear on the 10th of February at 1pm in Judge William Malcolm’s magistrate court. Unemployment numbers show a slight increase in Manhattan with the latest numbers, which show 4.1 percent in the city for November, compared to 3.9 percent in October. That’s still well below the 4.7 percent from last year at the same time. The Manhattan Metro- area, which includes Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties shows five percent, also up from 4.9 percent in October but lower than 5.5 percent the same time last year. Just last week the retirement of Riley County Police Detective Alan Riniker was announced, and RCPD Director Brad Schoen wasted little time in figuring out a way to have his job, primarily as a C-S-I lab technician, continue. Schoen suggested to Riley county law board members Monday a modification, with transition from an officer performing crime scene lab work, to a civilian position. The change was approved unanimously, with board member Wynn Butler extremely supportive, as the position means cost-savings. Daniel Brewer has been sentenced by Riley County courts Monday evening to two concurrent 12 to 20 year prison terms for 2 rapes that occurred in Ogden in 1981. Riley County  District Judge David Stutzman reasoned the offenses were worthy of actual prison time, and proceeded to give Brewer the 2 prison sentences to be served concurrently, but gave Brewer time off for time already served. Eddie Lowery was present in the courtroom, and says he is relieved that Brewer received the prison sentence.  Lowery was wrongfully convicted of one of the rapes and served a 10 year prison sentence. …

Wildcat Creek Road was reopened on Monday. Public works director Leon Hobson said there were a few minor problems when the road was inspected last week but it should be safe to commute on. “There were (about) three panels that had cracks in them, just slight cracks,” Hobson said. “We agreed with the contractor to wait until next year (to fix them).
