Cats Cupboard, the K-State Food Pantry that provides students immediate access to food and personal hygiene items at no cost, recently moved to a new location. Morrison Family Director of Cats Cupboard Shelly Williams says they are happy to have a new home. Research has shown that about 40% of K-State students struggle with food insecurity. Williams explains how a lack of food availability can hinder a student’s wellbeing. Williams explains the mission of Cats Cupboard. Cats Cupboard is available to all K-State students, even those who are enrolled in as low as one credit hour.

Officers responded to the report of an injury crash near the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Wreath Avenue in Manhattan on October 7, 2023, around 7:32 PM. When officers arrived on scene they found a 2013 Fiat 500 driven by Lisinda Bach, 42, of Ogden had crashed with a 2012 Cadillac CTS driven by Jason Kridner, 46, of Manhattan. Bach was transported to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Bach was issued a citation for failure to stop at a red light. Rising property taxes was a point of emphasis at the USD 383 candidate forum, hosted by the League of Women Voters Saturday. Candidates were asked how they think the school board should balance the needs of students without overburdening taxpayers. Incumbent Kristin Brighton says the board spends at least four months each year discussing the budget. Housing challenges within the city were a point of emphasis for city commission candidates at Saturday’s League of Women Voters forum, held at the Manhattan Public Library. Among the questions asked of candidates Saturday were how each think the city can provide affordable housing across the spectrum. Incumbent Mark Hatesohl says the city can do something with workforce housing money that’s coming in off of the city’s sales tax, which he says will provide about $8 million. Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo informed the county commission Thursday that due to overcrowding in the Riley County Jail, a second nurse is being requested by the Riley County Police Department. Last month, it was reported that the jail averaged around 124 inmates in August, the highest average on record. That figure is now approximately 140 inmates. Vargo says funds would have to come out of the Riley County budget as it contracts with a third party to provide nursing services. Riley County is statutorily required to provide those costs as its not an expense outlined in the RCPD budget.…
