The downtown area on Poyntz was a major topic of discussion at last night’s Manhattan City Commission work session. Many improvements to the roads were shown to Commissioners, and one question raised was how to pay for said improvements, which include new curbs, planters, crosswalks, and other items. Proposed was a split which would devote two-thirds of the cost to the City, and one third to the area businesses. They each took their turns bearing the load offensively this season, and the K-State sophomore tandem of Kaitlynn Pelger and Lilla Porubek was rewarded with all-Big 12 honors. Pelger led the Big 12 for most of the season in kills per set, before an ankle injury helped drop her numbers to 3rd in the league. She was named first team all-Big 12. Porubek stepped up during Pelger’s injury and helped K-State to wins in four of its last six matches. She was named honorable mention all-Big 12 and averaged 3.39 kills per set. The Sustainability Partnership was able to grant the Flint Hills Regional Council a two million dollar grant. Executive Director of the Council Ty Warner explains how the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal level of the Department of Transportation partnered to create this opportunity for the Flint Hills . Have you seen this fight yet between former CFL players Joe Kapp and Angelo Mosca? They’re both in their 70’s and their feud dates back to the 1960’s. They brawled on Friday at a luncheon before the Grey Cup. Kapp also quarterbacked the Vikings in a Super Bowl IV loss to the Chiefs, was the head coach at Cal, and also dabbled in acting. Mosca was a professional wrestler as well. Kapp starts the fight by bringing Mosca flowers on stage and then trying to rub them in his face. Cane swinging and punches ensue.
Manhattan’s Social Services Advisory Board Funded Social Service Agencies Public Forum was held at the Manhattan Public Library auditorium Monday night,with representatives from 11 agencies that service the Manhattan area giving presentations showing an overview of the services they provide, and the impact of city funds to their programs. Jim Reed of the Micah Society wanted the session to be a civil discourse on the topic, and wanted to get the message out to the community before the Manhattan City Commission went into budget talks in May 2012. Manhattan business owners should keep their eyes open for suspects matching the description in recent armed robbery cases. That’s according to Riley county Police Captain Tim Hegarty, who addressed Riley County Commissioners Monday morning. Hegarty indicates leads continue to be worked in the cases, with three armed robberies in a week time period. Hegarty also suggests if business owners see someone matching the suspect or suspects descriptions, to let police know–as frequently suspects may check out a target ahead of time. Fire involving a semi-tractor trailer on I-70 caused some problems Monday. The semi was loaded with 34 large round bales of hay, which were destroyed in the blaze. The driver was able to turn off onto Deep Creek Road exit in Geary county. firefighters from both Riley and Geary counties spent five hours putting out the fire, with 11 people from four stations in Riley county responding. Riley county fire chief Pat Collins tells KMAN more than 24,000 gallons of water were hauled from Manhattan to control the fire.
