Yet another armed robbery in Manhattan, this time at the Dara’s Fast Lane at 5321 Tuttle Creek Blvd. A press release from RCPD Capt. Richard Fink says Dara’s management reported the robbery occurred around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening when a white male  presented the clerk with a note. The suspect then raised his jacket and revealed a gun in the waist band of his jeans, though at no point removed it from his pants. Riley County police have arrested a Manhattan man on a charge of sexual exploitation of a child. Michael Combs, 34, was taken into custody Tuesday, after a search warrant was executed at his home in the 2100 block of Patricia Place. The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation involving the possession of child pornography and was executed by the Riley County Police Department Internet Crimes against children Unit and the Special Investigations Unit. Combs’ bond has been set at $5,000.

Growth means more traffic, and that means more road concerns for Pottawatomie county officials. County Administrator Robert Reece says increased traffic and road improvements are to be expected in the many new subdivisions which are going up in the county, particularly in the St. George area. Once again Manhattan has impressive unemployment numbers compared to other metropolitan areas in the state. The Manhattan metro area shows 4.9 percent, the lowest for metro areas. The Manhattan M-S-A includes Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties. The 4.9 percent October figure is lower than September 5.4 number and lower than last year’s 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, the city of Manhattan had a 3.9 percent unemployment rate, also the lowest in the state for cities. (AP)   Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to Rob Gronkowski and the New England Patriots shook off a sluggish start to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 34-3 on Monday night.  Julian Edelman returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown and Kyle Arrington had two interceptions, helping the Patriots (7-3) increased their AFC East lead to two games. Two area legends will be enshrined in the Kansas High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in the class of 2012. Manhattan High graduate Amy Oberhelman won 10 state championships and was named all-American 13 times during her career as a swimmer from 1990 until 1994.  Oberhelman set six state records including the 200 freestyle, which still stands today.  She attended Stanford University where she helped lead the Cardinal to three NCAA championships, and was named an all-American eight times. 12 team state titles and 71 individual state champions in cross country and track, that’s the tally in 33 years…

(AP)   Suspended Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel says he “failed miserably” as a role model after his recent drunken-driving arrest and guilty plea.  Pinkel publicly discussed his Nov. 16 arrest and subsequent conviction for the first time Monday, meeting with reporters at his attorney’s office. Pinkel did not coach during Missouri’s win over Texas Tech on Saturday as part of a one-week unpaid suspension. Kansas State elevated the talent of its front court during the early signing as head coach Frank Martin announced the additions of high school standouts Robert Upshaw and Laimonas Chatkevicius for the class of 2012. It’s been a tough year for Ole Miss at 2-9, and Saturday night was no different as the Rebels were taking a 52-3 drubbing at the hands of #1 LSU.  Ole Miss doesn’t lack size as they have the biggest player in the country, 6′ 10″ 377 pound defensive tackle Terrell Brown.  Brown has lost 33 pounds since arriving on the Oxford campus, but was no match for a folding chair on the Rebel bench.
