Update:  A Junction City man died in a two vehicle accident on I-70 that closed eastbound lanes of the highway early this (Thursday) morning. Kyle Junghans, 39,  died in the crash at mile marker 324. Thomas McCoy, 42,  of Manhattan was in the other vehicle involved and was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City. McCoy is listed in serious condition (Friday morning). According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Junghans was westbound on I-70 in a ’98 ford ranger when he lost control, left the roadway, and crossed the median. His Ranger then struck a 2007 Ford…

Construction, Football and the Child, Youth and School Services offices at Fort Riley were issues the Manhattan Ogden school board had at their meeting Wednesday night. Woodrow Wilson had a work order for new cabinets, which the board approved unanimously.  Also, Dean Youngers, Project Manager, reminded the board and the public that during the holiday break, no one will be allowed in the high school due to construction that will be occurring. K-State students and Occupy Manhattan advocates had a chance to gain a different perspective on the U.S. Economy on Tuesday. The Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice welcomed Director of Labor Studies at UMKC Judy Ancel to K-State’s Forum Hall for the group’s monthly lecture. A weekend party turned bad for a Manhattan woman. On Wednesday, Riley County police received report of a theft that occurred overnight between October 22nd and 23rd. The victim, 20-year old Acantha Smith, told police that her wedding ring, cell phone, and prescription medication were taken from her home located in the 700 block of Allison. The total loss came to $1,622. RCPD says there are no suspects at this time.

(AP) Nebraska volleyball star Lauren Cook will be held out of Friday and Saturday’s matches against Michigan and Michigan State after being arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident last weekend. Coach John Cook, Lauren’s father, said Wednesday that her return depends on how the legal case turns out. She will continue to practice with the team, currently ranked No. 2. A Manhattan man is in RCPD custody in connection with a stabbing that occurred Tuesday. Joshua Foster, 18, was taken into police custody on Wednesday on charges of aggravated battery. Foster is believed to be the individual who stabbed Luke Johnson, 48, during an altercation that occurred early Tuesday morning. According to police reports,  Johnson arrived at a female acquaintance’s home located in the 700 block of Griffith Drive. Two of the female’s male relatives – one being Foster – told Johnson to leave, and then followed Johnson to the parking lot. Police say Johnson and the two men argued,…

Wamego’s City employees won’t see much of an increase in their health benefits come 2012 City Manager Merl Page reported to city commissioners Tuesday,  the average increase to the health insurance premiums in the new agreement is .75%, which Page said is basically flat-lined. The Commission approved the renewal and Page said they will leave the employee participation at the same level as last year. No issues were reported stemming from an audit of the City of Wamego. City commissioners received an update on the 2010 audited statements from Reese & Novelly, P.A., audit team members Carol McCullough and Michele Morton. According to McCullough, the audit was all clean with no issues. She added there have never been any issues with City Manager Merl Page’s financial statements, and if there have been the firm would have presented the statements earlier. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)   Interim Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas says he expects West Virginia to start play in the conference next season despite the Big East’s attempts to keep the university from a quick exit.  Neinas attended a reception in Morgantown officially welcoming the Mountaineers into the Big 12 on Tuesday.  A day earlier, the university sued the Big East, seeking to clear the way for it to start Big 12 play next fall.  The Big East has said it plans to keep West Virginia for two more years.  West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck and university President James…
