Sales tax numbers for Manhattan in October are slightly less than a year ago but higher than the budget estimate for the city. $892,090 was collected, with an adjusted amount of $830,450.. $43,180 less was collected than last year at the same time. However that’s still well over the $773,000 that had been budgeted. City Finance Director Bernie Hayen notes this year’s October distribution, which actuall reflects August retail sales, did not include the Intercollegiate Athletics ticket sales total as it did a year ago. The new Riley County Health Department administrator has been selected. Current Assistant Administartor Suzanne Kufahl was approved as the new administrator by the health board on Wednesday. The motion passed 7-to-1 with one member abstaining. Kufahl’s starting salary will be $94,000, effective when she begins her new role January 1st of 2012. Kufahl has spent the last 14 years acting as assistant administrator. She takes over for Charles Murphy, who is retiring at the end of the calendar year.
Former Wyoming Senator and Washington insider Alan K. Simpson spoke at McCain Auditorium Wednesday morning, in a talk entitled “The Moment of Truth: Confronting Issues in America”. Simpson spoke about topics such as health care, tax revenue, and social security funding, which were all interspersed with jokes and witticisms. Simpson served three years in the US Senate representing Wyoming.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) American Royal leaders say it’s time to tear down the aging Kemper Arena and replace it with a new equestrian center that better fits the needs of Kansas City’s premier annual livestock show. The Kansas City Star reports the idea has the backing of R. Crosby Kemper Jr. and his son Mariner Kemper, who pledged Tuesday to help raise millions of dollars in private donations for the new center. R. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have hired Dave Eiland as their new pitching coach. Eiland spent the past season as special assistant to Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman, but prior to that served three seasons as the New York Yankees’ pitching coach. He takes over for Bob McClure, who was let go after five seasons with the Royals. Royals manager Ned Yost said last month that he wanted a pitching coach who had spent a long time in the major leagues with “mediocre stuff,” meaning that person had to make the most of what…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have waived wide receiver Jeremy Horne and moved fullback Shane Bannon to the practice squad injured list. The team announced the moves late Tuesday. Horne played three games last season and three more this season for Kansas City after signing as a rookie free agent out of UMass last year. He does not have a catch in the NFL while playing mostly on special teams. Bnnon was the team’s seventh-round pick in this year’s draft out of Yale.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Interstate 70 has reopened to westbound traffic but remained closed to eastbound vehicles near downtown Topeka, nearly 12 hours after the fatal, pre-dawn of a tractor-trailer. The crash happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, spilling hot asphalt oil from the rig’s tanker and pulling down an overhead sign. The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the driver as 57-year-old Paul Cardwell, of Abilene. The Kansas Department of Transportation says westbound lanes reopened about 4:30 p.m. Eastbound I-70 was reopened at 9:30 p.m.
EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) Emporia State University has scheduled a memorial service for two students killed last in week by a fire in their off-campus apartment. The service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall on the Emporia State campus. Authorities have said Yawai Fan, 23, and Zheng Lin, 22, died Oct. 20 when items lying on the grate of a floor furnace ignited in their duplex. Both came to Emporia State from China in the fall semester of 2009. Fan was a sophomore studying for his chemistry degree. Lin was studying for her master’s degree in…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) As Halloween approaches, vampires are getting some academic scrutiny at Washburn University in Topeka. Professor Thomas Prasch will discuss the social history of the blood-craving creatures at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Henderson Learning Resources Center. The event is free and open to the public. But Washburn officials caution the program isn’t appropriate for younger listeners because of the graphic subject matter. The talk will focus on how the legends of vampires have evolved in response to society’s fears and concerns.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) One of the country’s best-known storm chasers brings his 16,000-pound armored tornado intercept vehicle to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Museum next month. Sean Casey, star of “Storm Chasers” on the Discovery Channel, will be at the Hutchinson attraction Nov. 4-5 for a series of weather-related activities and family events. Casey’s film “Tornado Alley” will be shown several times both days in the Cosmosphere’s IMAX dome. The two-day event follows one of the most destructive tornado seasons in the nation’s history.
