A four overtime win over Texas A&M isn’t going un-noticed for K-State. The Cats have two big 12 players of the week on both offense and special teams. Collin Klein is the big 12 offensive player of the week. Klein accounted for six total scores (the most in the Big 12 this season), including a school-record-tying five on the ground. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel could miss the remainder of the season after sustaining what coach Todd Haley is calling a “significant” injury to his throwing hand. Cassel hurt his right hand near the end of the Chiefs’ 17-10 loss to Denver on Sunday. The injury appeared to occur when Cassel was sacked by Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller, though Haley wasn’t sure if it was the hit or the way Cassel landed on the turf that caused it. Haley refused to say whether the team would put the former Pro Bowl quarterback on injured reserve. …
30 wins and a return trip to the state tournament were the accomplishments for the Manhattan High volleyball this season. The Kansas Volleyball Association placed three Indians on its all-state teams, released today (Monday). Senior outside hitter MJ Massanet, the 2010 6A player of the year, received first team honors. Massanet will play her college volleyball at Nebraska-Kearney. MHS senior setter Sarah Tatarko made the second team, and senior opposite Alexia Evans got honorable mention.
For the first time since 2006, K-State took a set from Texas in Austin but ultimately fell in four sets. The Cats played nearly mistake-free in the opener against the #6 ranked Longhorns, winning 25-23. Texas though bounced back to claim victory over the final three frames 25-16, 25-18, 25-20. Tasha Dickey scored 20 points and grabbed six steals as the K-State women routed Dartmouth 54-20 in the season opener on Saturday night at Bramlage. Dickey, a transfer from Arizona, had the best debut offensively for a Wildcat since Laurie Koehn in 2001. The Cats held the Big Green to just 10 points in each half, and the overall output was the lowest by a K-State opponent since Mississippi Valley State posted just 18 points nearly five years ago. A Manhattan man charged with the murder of a veteran pleaded ‘not guilty’ inside Riley County District Court on Monday. 24-year old Justin Taylor, of the 600 block of Vattier Street, was arrested in connection with the August 11th death of 31-year old Kevin Lynn Cockrum. The two were involved in an early-morning altercation near the 1000 block of Moro Street. Taylor allegedly struck Cockrum in the head several times with a flashlight during the fight. Cockrum died from the wounds hours later. The case is set to go to trial at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31. If convicted, Taylor could face…
GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) The body of a 25-year-old man has been found southwest of Great Bend. Barton County Sheriff Greg Armstrong told The Great Bend Tribune that hunters found the body of Great Bend resident Damon Galyardt on Saturday. Armstrong did not release the cause of death but said it’s under investigation.
