Most area schools report not much difference in numbers for September 20th, the official count day that determines the bulk of enrollment and financing for school districts. USD 383 still reports about an increase of 69 students with its bricks and mortars buildings, and up about 83 if virtual students are included. USD 378 Superintendent Brad Starnes says his was one of the district’s with not much change from earlier in the year. Manhattan’s City Commission met Tuesday night to discuss only a couple of items. First up was the first stage of a plan to replace the Traffic Operation Facility, which was rendered inoperable by the August 2010 microburst. Commissioners took very little time in discussion, passing the plan along by a unanimous vote. The new facility will sit on a City-owned lot at the intersection of 11th and El Paso Streets. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents says the board will discuss conference realignment at its meeting Thursday, but he remains confident the Big 12 can survive. Ed McKechnie told The Kansas City Star that the meeting will be held in executive session and will be attended by officials from both K-State and KU. He says that as long as five schools remain committed to the Big 12, the conference can survive. McKechnie says he expects “everybody to live up to their obligations and honor the contracts they have signed.”
NEW YORK (AP) The Big East and Big 12 have been discussing ways to merge what’s left of the two leagues if Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12. A source said Monday there has been dialogue between athletic directors and high-level officials in the conference offices. Syracuse and Pittsburgh have announced they will be leaving the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference. UConn and Rutgers are also rumored to be following them to the ACC. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Officials from Major League Baseball are in Kansas City this week to begin planning for the 2012 All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium. Baseball officials are meeting Monday and Tuesday with Kansas City Royals executives to plan festivities surrounding the first All-Star Game hosted by the franchise since 1973. Chiefs coach Todd Haley confirmed today that running back Jamaal Charles is done for the season and will go on injured reserve. Charles suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s 48-3 loss against Detroit. Last season, Charles finished second in the league in rushing with 1,467 yards and had a 6.4-yards per carry average. He ended the year playing in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.
