(AP) Travis Hafner hit one of the longest home runs in Kauffman Stadium history, Shelly Duncan homered and drove in three runs and the Cleveland Indians romped past the Kansas City Royals 13-7 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Casey Kotchman and Jason Kipnis homered on consecutive pitches for Cleveland in the eighth inning. For the first time in the Indians’ 111-year history, they scored at least eight runs in their first three road games of a season. Royals outfielder Mitch Maier pitched the ninth. He worked a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.
Things get awkward between New Jersey Nets announcers Ian Eagle and Mike Fratello on the YES Network. Eagle takes Fratello to task on Saturday night in a blowout loss to the Boston Celtics.
The Kansas State Highway Patrol says a collision between a truck and a van carrying an eight-member construction crew killed two people and injured six others. KHP Lt. Greg Harkrader tells KMAN the accident occurred early this (Monday) morning. The accident was one mile north of Milford and killed the drivers of the two vehicles. The six injured passengers in the van had to be cut from the wreckage. Dying in the accident were Lancy Davis II, 39, of Palmer and Juan Perez, 52, of Wichita. KMAN witnessed the opening ceremony as many speakers and performances took place. The grand opening featured speakers including Governor Sam Brownback and Mayor Jim Sherow, musical performances and a ribbon cutting. The Baseball game between Kansas State and Baylor was suspended Saturday with the Wildcats leading the Bears 10-8 in the top of the 6th inning. The game was stopped when lightning was detected close to Tointon Family Stadium and fans were moved out of the seating area for their safety. The game will resume on Sunday at Noon CDT and then the third game of the series will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended game. Air-time for K-State Baseball on Sunday will be at 11:55 a.m. CDT.
Election season is moving forward, and Saturday some of the focus was on the national level at the Riley County Democratic caucus. Speakers such as 66th District State Representative Sydney Carlin and Manhattan Mayor Jim Sherow were on hand to talk to the audience, as well as answer questions. A short film about President Barack Obama’s first term was also shown. The caucus pledged its support to the President, as there is no other Democratic candidate in the Presidential race.
