More discussion Tuesday regarding the re-scheduling of a sentencing involving a 30-year-old rape case, but nothing was firmed up during another hearing Tuesday afternoon involving Daniel Brewer. Brewer was to have been sentenced Tuesday, but the matter has been moved, with no date determined as of late Tuesday. Brewer pleaded no contest to one rape charge and guilty to another charge in connection with rapes in Ogden in 1981. Kansas State has set another enrollment record. This fall Kansas State University has recorded its best enrollment yet, according to 20th-day figures announced by the Kansas Board of Regents. A record-breaking 23,863 students are attending K-State both on and off campus, up from 23,588 last year. Economic Development ratings from last year were presented to the Manhattan City Commission at Tuesday night’s work session at City Hall. The ratings were based on a variety of factors including number of jobs created, the amount of the City’s investment, and amounts of capital generated. All businesses but one were given high ratings, many surpassing their goals by significant numbers. Also discussed was the Road and Bridge half-cent sales tax, which will end in 2012. The Commission agreed that a renewal of the tax would be on the ballot in the next election, and much discussion was had as…
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive welcomed Texas A&M as the 13th member of the league on Monday and says he doesn’t expect to add another team before the Aggies begin play next season. The SEC announced Sunday that Texas A&M would leave the Big 12 to join the conference next July and will compete in all sports for the 2012-13 academic year. The Aggies are the first newcomers since South Carolina and Arkansas joined the conference in 1992. K-State makes its second straight appearance on ABC as the Wildcats’ October 8 Big 12 Conference matchup with Missouri will be broadcast by the network beginning at 2:30 p.m., K-State and Big 12 officials announced on Monday. Saturday’s Big 12 opener against No. 15 Baylor will also be aired on ABC. It’s the first time since 2003 that multiple games will air on ABC during the same season. Tickets still remain for both the Baylor and Missouri games as fewer than 3,000 remain for this weekend’s Big 12 Conference opener between the 3-0 Wildcats and 3-0 Bears.
For the second straight week Kansas State middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger has been recognized for her prowess on the court being named Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Pelger received the honor last week after averaging 5.19 kills per set over four matches. This week she repeats with an amazing average of 5.67 kills in a sweep over the Baylor Bears in K-State’s only action of the week. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Melky Cabrera became the first Kansas City player in 11 years to get 200 hits and Mike Moustakas hit the go-ahead home run in a four-run sixth inning as the Royals topped the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Monday night. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Justice Department is suing to recover more than $1.8 million from a Coffeyville refinery for unpaid cleanup costs stemming from a 2007 oil spill into floodwaters of the Verdigris River. A civil complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court also seeks a court order forcing Coffeyville Resources Refining Marketing to comply with environmental regulations to prevent further discharges. It also is asking for civil penalties for violations. Company spokesman Steve Eames says the company is aware of the lawsuit but has not been served yet with it.
