Enrollment numbers were a little late in coming from Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 the first day of school, with all the construction projects occupying much of Associate Superintendent Bob Seymour’s time. But Seymour had those numbers for KMAN this (Thursday) morning. The number is up 171 students from last year, with 5875 this year compared to 5704 last year in grades K-12.  Seymour explains that is for the “bricks and mortars buildings,” meaning no virtual, pre-school, or pre-school special education students.  He adds adjustments will continue to be made. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)   Missouri athletic director Mike Alden is standing behind the school’s embattled men’s basketball coach   to a point.  Frank Haith’s future has come into question after Yahoo Sports reported last week that a former University of Miami booster said he paid then-Hurricanes recruit DeQuan Jones $10,000 to attend the school with Haith’s approval.  Haith spent seven years at Miami before Alden hired him in April.  Alden discussed Haith for the first time Wednesday at a kickoff party for Missouri football boosters.  Asked by The Associated Press if he supports Haith, Alden replied, “We support the NCAA…

TORONTO (AP)   Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking home run in the seventh inning, Jose Bautista added his major league-leading 37th homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night.  Jesse Litsch (5-3) pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the win.  Frank Francisco worked ninth for his 11th save.  Louis Coleman (1-3) took the loss for the Royals, who have not won consecutive games since Aug. 3-4.  Kansas City has won four of its past 16.  Lawrie broke a 3-3 tie with a leadoff blast to left in the seventh, his fourth. …

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   The agent for Brandon Siler says the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker tore his Achilles tendon during practice and will miss the entire season.  David Canter confirmed the injury in a text message to The Associated Press on Wednesday. He did not know which Achilles was hurt on Tuesday, but he said Siler has already had surgery to repair it.  Siler was competing for the middle linebacker spot beside Derrick Johnson after signing with the Chiefs as a free agent.  He had looked good throughout fall camp after picking up 44 tackles, one sack and one…

Two years have swiftly passed since the Manhattan Regional Airport first began its partnership with American Eagle regional Jet Services, and the years have been beneficial to both parties. That’s according to Airport Director Peter Van Kuren, who says initially offering service to Dallas-Fort Worth, the service expanded to Chicago. The deal to get the service going was complicated, involving the airport pledging to help pay costs in the case of monetary shortage on American Eagle’s side. The airport will have refreshments throughout the day (today) for passengers, and a cake cutting at 11 am.

Kansas 4-H is hosting a get aquainted reception for Barbara Stone, who was appointed state leader for the youth development effort earlier this year.  The event is scheduled for the 9th of September on the first day of the 2011 Kansas State Fair.  It starts at 11 am and ends at 1.pm in the 4-h Centennial hall at the north end of the fairgrounds. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A new federal report says the banking industry in Kansas is more efficient and safer than it was last year. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. report released Tuesday says the industry recorded big increases in earnings and capital and in the second fiscal quarter compared with the same quarter last year. The Wichita Eagle reports that the banks and thrifts increased net income by 169 percent to $234 million in the second quarter, compared with $87 million in last year’s second quarter. LYNDON, Kan. (AP) A longtime friend of a man accused of killing four family members in Kansas tells jurors James Kraig Kahler was not himself shortly before the killings. Attorneys for Kahler, 48, on Wednesday called Victor Holtorf of Fort Collins, Co., as a witness in Kahler’s capital murder trial. Kahler is charged with shooting his estranged wife, their two teenage daughters and his wife’s grandmother the weekend after Thanksgiving 2009 at the grandmother’s house about 20 miles south of Topeka.
