The Manhattan Optimist Lasers 18-and-under softball team won an invitational tournament in Independence, Missouri over the weekend. The Lasers won their first five games at the tournament, but dropped the first championship game of the double eliminaton tournament to the Trenton Missouri Phantoms 5-2. But the Lasers came back to beat the Phantoms 8-0 in the winner take all final with Katie Hodges pitching a shutout. Kylie Rupe also pitched, and led the offense with 11 hits, seven for extra bases. The Lasers are now 26-9 on the season.

A group of five K-State Wildcats are competing this weekend at the USA track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. The Cats’ two NCAA title winners will both compete, Erik Kynard in the high jump and Ryann Krais in the heptathlon. The top three finishers in each event at the USA meet qualify for the national team at the World Championships as long as they meet the “A” qualifying standard. For the second consecutive year, the Big 12 led all other conferences with six first round picks in the NBA Draft. Texas’ Tristan Thompson was one of the surprises of the night by being selected #4 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. More post season honors are here for Nick Martini and James Allen. The pair were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Midwest Region second team. It was Allen’s first selection to the team, while it was the second time in Martini’s career he was named to the ABCA All-Midwest Region team after his first-team honor a year ago. The honors mark the fifth-straight season a Wildcat has been named all-region, and it is the first time since 1997 that Kansas State had two players on the list.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) Players and staff from the Kansas City Chiefs are vowing to stay committed to Joplin’s recovery after spending a day helping clear debris from last month’s monster tornado. More than 130 players, coaches and front-office personnel traveled in buses Thursday to Joplin, where they put on dust masks and work gloves before hauling rubble to the street in one devastated neighborhood. The NBA Draft is Thursday night in Newark, New Jersey, and a new obstacle is in front of Jacob Pullen. The Sacramento Bee reports that Pullen went down holding his right knee today at a workout for the Sacramento Kings. The Kings beat writer for the Bee, Jason Jones, joined the Game on SportsRadio 1350, and he says Pullen was hurt at the end of a workout. Pullen had previously worked out for 11 other NBA teams. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas licensed practical nurse from Riley has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for diverting prescription painkillers. The U.S. attorney’s office says 37-year-old Denise Carlson was sentenced Monday. She pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy. Carlson admitted conspiring to distribute and dispense Oxycodone and Oxycontin with her sister Katherine Surowski, who was a pharmacist in Salina, and Manhattan nurse Christine Swanson. Prosecutors said Carlson forged physicians’ signatures on stolen prescription pads. Her sister also stole prescription pads for the conspiracy. Surowski filled the prescriptions at her job at the Salina K-Mart pharmacy. Swanson was sentenced…

Pottawatomie County health director Leslie Campbell shared some good news with county commissioners at a meeting held Monday in Westmoreland. Campbell talks about state funding… “We got level funding for maternal child health and immunization action plan,” Campbell said. “The state will be sending around $110,515 (for next year).
