EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) Emporia firefighters have found a body while fighting a mobile home fire. Fire officials said smoke was coming from the home when crews arrived Tuesday afternoon. Officials haven’t released the name, age or gender of the victim found inside the structure. The fire was extinguished quickly and no one else was injured. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, but The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that an overloaded circuit is suspected of sparking the blaze. No other details were immediately released.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A suburban Johnson County teenager has been sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention in a death linked to a skateboarder feud. The Kansas City Star reported that if Shane Reed, 18, of Prairie Village fails in the juvenile system, he also faces an adult sentence of 11 months in prison for aiding a felon and one year in jail for possession of a firearm by a juvenile. Manhattan’s cellphone ordinance has  been in effect for over eight months now and Riley County Police officials reported some updated numbers to the Riley County Law Board Monday. RCPD Captain Tim Hegarty said 180 drivers have been pulled over for texting while driving, with nearly 14-hundred either cited or warned about talking on a cell phone. As for the cell phone ban’s effectiveness in reducing incidents of accidents caused by inattentive driving, RCPD Director Brad Schoen told the Law Board they hadn’t seen any numbers that would suggest there has been an impact one way or another. The budget for the City of Manhattan has seen a lot of debate at City Commission meetings, but at Tuesday night’s meeting, the discussion was fairly quick and agreeable, as the 2012 budget passed unanimously. Budget officer Emily Campbell reminded commissioners the general fund was slated to decrease by about $77, 000, while the employee benefit fund will increase by $66,000 . The mill levy will be upped by an average of .221 mills, as the city’s portion will decrease .254 mills. The outside services mill levy will see an increase for 2012 of .475 mills. OLATHE, Kan. (AP) The body of a Kansas soldier killed in a helicopter shoot-down in Afghanistan has returned home to Olathe. Hundreds of people lined the route today as Spencer Duncan’s body was driven from the Gardner airport to a funeral home. His friends and family used social networking sites to urge people to “Stand for Spencer.”

Construction workers working on renovations at Woodrow Wilson Elementary school on Juliette Avenue in Manhattan ruptured a gas line Tuesday afternoon. According to the Manhattan Fire Department, a worker reportedly hit the gas line with a back hoe, not knowing the line went through that area. The Manhattan Fire Department was on the scene and reports there were no injuries and evacuations were not needed.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP)   Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin says there is still a chance the Aggies will stay in the Big 12.  Loftin spoke Monday after receiving authority from the board of regents to take any action he deems necessary in terms of conference realignment.  He says Texas A&M is looking only at the Southeastern Conference right now, but didn’t rule out other possibilities.  The Big 12 is down to 10 teams after Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-12) left in July.  Loftin says any realignment by Texas A&M will take place after a “lengthy’ process. (AP)   Kansas State is starting a high-definition digital network that will broadcast some live sporting events, replays of classic games, news conferences and other events.  The network, called K-StateHD.TV, will feature games that aren’t picked up by the Big 12 Network Television Package.  That will include one football game per year, K-State vs. Eastern Kentucky this season, a handful of women’s basketball games and most home volleyball and baseball games.  There probably won’t be any men’s basketball games available.  Kansas State sports information director Kenny Lannou says it’s an extension of more limited service that already is…

(AP)   A source tells The Associated Press that high school outfielder Bubba Starling and the Kansas City Royals agreed late Monday night to a minor league contract with a $7.5 million signing bonus.  The signing bonus is payable over three years because Starling is a two-sport athlete.  There was some question whether he would sign with the Royals before the deadline or play quarterback for Nebraska, where he had received a scholarship offer.  Starling was the fifth overall pick out of Gardner, Kan., a short drive south of Kansas City.  The 18-year-old was widely considered the…
