The Wildcat Creek Area Watershed Working Group was busy creating new sub committees last night to tackle the Manhattan area flooding issues. Co-chair Richard Jankovich set up the committees in six different categories.  The categories were Grants and Funding Sources, Detention and Watershed, Development and Freeboard, Research and Data Collection, Debris Mitigation and Enforcement, and Education and Marketing. Jankovich said the committees were created to tackle the complex problem involved in the area flooding, and each committee would also have subject matter experts from to assist in their assignments. The Riley County-Manhattan Health department is working closely with the county as it prepares to transition to county-run entity. County clerk Rich Vargo met with health board administrator Chuck Murphy and assistant administrator Suzanne Kufahl Thursday to address health department employee concerns. Vargo contends that all parties left the discussion feeling satisfied. “We talked about the transition from a 37.5 hour work week to a 40 hour work week,” Vargo said. “Going from the monthly pay scale (they are on) to the bi-weekly system that we use. A Kansas food group has issued a challenge to the Manhattan. Our Local Food is asking families in town to take part in a challenge starting on August 27th and running through September 3rd. The objective? To eat four out of five meals of locally grown food. A Manhattan man is in critical condition after being brutally beaten early Thursday morning. Riley County Police discovered 31-year old Kevin Lynn Cockrum lying on the ground unconscious in an alley of the 1000 block of Moro Street. Riley County police say that Cockrum was beaten by unknown individuals. Riley County EMS transported Cockrum to Mercy Regional Health Center with life-threatening head injuries. Cockrum was taken by LIFESTAR to Via Christi Hospital in Wichita where he remains in critical condition. No suspects have been identified at this time but RCPD say that a white vehicle occupied by three black males…

Donald G. Guthals, father of commissioner David Guthals, died  Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was born August 31, 1928 in Elmo, Kansas. On May 29, 1950, Guthals married Helen Margaret Stover. They later moved to Elmo where Mr. Guthals taught at Carlton  grade school and Hope High School. Mrs. Guthals preceded Donald in death, passing on April 19, 2011. Guthals is survived by his two daughters, Karen Burkholder of Topeka, and Linda Whitt of Wichita; his two sons, Donald Frederick Guthals of Grand Island, Neb., and David Louis Guthals of Manhattan; and sister Mary Ann Foley of West…

During last summer’s conference shuffle, Texas A&M flirted with the idea of joining the SEC, but ultimately stayed in the new 10-team Big 12.  Rumors have picked up again since the creation of Texas’ new Longhorn Network, and Governor Rick Perry fanned the flames Wednesday night.  The former Aggie yell leader and presidential candidate told the Dallas Morning News that “conversations are being had” about A&M possibly joining the SEC.  Perry didn’t specify if those conversations were internal or with the SEC. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The attorney for a Manhattan therapist charged with stalking a Fort Riley soldier has notified prosecutors he plans to present an insanity defense. A document filed Wednesday in the case of therapist Rachelle Santiago says she intends to introduce expert evidence relating to her insanity and diminished capacity due to mental disease or defect. Her public defender, Ronald Wurtz, says their experts will be psychologists and a psychiatrist. Santiago’s trial is Sept. 27, with a motion hearing Aug. 29. Suzie Fritz’s Wildcats look to be an improved team this fall, and they’ll have to prove it as the league coaches voted them 8th in the Big 12 preseason poll.  The Cats received 20 points in the survey of the nine coaches in the conference, two points behind seventh place KU.  Texas went 27-6 last year and advanced to the Final Four.  The Horns are the preseason Big 12 champ, receiving seven first place votes.  Iowa State picked up the other two first place votes, and is tied for second with Oklahoma.  Texas A&M is picked fourth, followed by Missouri, Baylor,…

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have purchased the contract of catcher Salvador Perez from Triple-A Omaha.  The move was made before Wednesday night’s game against Tampa Bay.  The 21-year old Perez hit .333 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 12 games at Omaha after being promoted from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.  He was batting seventh in Wednesday’s lineup.  The Royals also placed catcher Brayan Pena on the paternity leave list and put pitcher Kyle Davies on unconditional release waivers.  Pena returned home to Miami on Wednesday for the birth of his child and is expected to rejoin…
