MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP)   Kansas State is starting a high-definition digital network that will broadcast some live sporting events, replays of classic games, news conferences and other events.  The network, called K-StateHD.TV, will feature games that aren’t picked up by the Big 12 Network Television Package.  That will include one football game per year, K-State vs. Eastern Kentucky this season, a handful of women’s basketball games and most home volleyball and baseball games.  There probably won’t be any men’s basketball games available.  Kansas State sports information director Kenny Lannou says it’s an extension of more limited service that already is…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   A source tells The Associated Press that high school outfielder Bubba Starling and the Kansas City Royals agreed late Monday night to a minor league contract with a $7.5 million signing bonus.  The signing bonus is payable over three years because Starling is a two-sport athlete.  There was some question whether he would sign with the Royals before the deadline or play quarterback for Nebraska, where he had received a scholarship offer.  Starling was the fifth overall pick out of Gardner, Kan., a short drive south of Kansas City.  The 18-year-old was widely considered the…

The issue of Riley County Police over time pay came up at the Riley County Law Board meeting on Monday. Board Chair Karen McCulloh voiced her concern, pointing out the RCPD was already running at 75% of their allotted overtime hours. RCPD Director Brad Schoen explained that the numbers were par for the course, adding they usually do run over a bit every year. Schoen said that court cases, and incidents such as the recent murder investigations tend to drive up the over time hours.  To date RCPD is at 75 percent of its overtime budget for the year. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Authorities are investigating the death of a worker at a northeast Kansas rail yard. Police in Kansas City, Kan., were called to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe yard around 1:30 p.m. Monday after the man was found trapped between two rail cars. Investigators say the man apparently was hit by a railroad car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The worker was described as in his 40s. His name was being withheld while family members were notified.

LYNDON, Kan. (AP) An attorney who represented a murdered Missouri woman in a divorce case is a witness in the capital murder trial of her estranged husband in Kansas. Prosecutors were preparing Tuesday to call Dan Pingelton, of Columbia, Mo., for their second day of evidence against James Kraig Kahler, 48. Kahler is charged in Osage County District Court with killing his estranged wife, their two daughters, and his wife’s grandmother. They were shot in the grandmother’s home outside Burlingame, about 20 miles south of Topeka. Pingelton represented Kahler’s estranged wife in the couple’s divorce case in Columbia, where Kahler…

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) The body of a Kansas soldier who was killed in Afghanistan is scheduled to return home to Olathe. U.S. Army Specialist Spencer Duncan’s body will return to his home in Olathe Tuesday. He was one of 30 American soldiers killed Aug. 6 when a Chinook helicopter was shot down. Duncan’s body is scheduled to land at New Century AirCenter near Gardner around 9 a.m. His supporters are asking residents in the area to honor him by lining up along 151st Street from Lone Elm Road to Blackbob by 9:45 a.m.

Riley County Police reported on Monday that two Fort Riley soldiers were arrested over the weekend on charges of battery and aggravated battery. RCPD reports indicate that at 12:15 in the morning on Sunday a fight broke out in the alleyway of 1209 Laramie. RCPD accounts of the incident indicate that a witness heard loud shouting, and then saw three men on the ground fighting. RCPD is naming 26 year old Joshua Mendenhall of Kansas City Missouri as the victim. Mendenhall was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center after the altercation, and received 5 stitches across his face from multiple…
