WASHINGTON (AP) Three schools in Kansas have been awarded “green ribbon” honors from the U.S. Department of Education The department said in a release Monday that the schools are Eisenhower High in Goddard, Erie High in Erie and Brookwood Elementary in Leawood. The federal agency began the Green Ribbon Schools program last year. It honors schools that use a comprehensive approach to sustainability by cutting utility costs and providing healthy learning environments. The Kansas schools given the one-year designation were among 78 honored nationwide.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A commission in northeast Kansas is taking nominations until May 24 for a seat on the state trial court that sits in Topeka. The new judge will replace Judge Charles Andrews, who retired from the Shawnee County District Court at the end of March. Nominations will be screened by a seven-member commission headed by Kansas Supreme Court Justice Marla Luckert. Attorneys can nominate themselves, or people can suggest candidates. Kansas State University’s Vice President of Research Ron Trewyn has been making the rounds recently, with presentations for both Riley County Commissioners and intergovernmental leaders Monday. Trewyn was asked at the intergovernmental meeting about recent news out of Wichita, with Kansas Senate President Steve Morris saying a split between conservative Congressman Tim Huelskamp and Speaker of the House John Boehner could impact funding for the National Bio and Agri-defense Facility. After being swept over the weekend by Missouri, the K-State baseball team will look to pick up the pieces on Tuesday night against Wichita State.  Errors and a lack of timely hitting plagued the Cats against the Tigers, as they dropped to 3-12 in the Big 12.  The team K-State always wants to beat is of course KU, but on the baseball diamond, the Wildcats’ biggest rival is Wichita State.  The Cats had beat Wichita State eight times in a row before the Shockers won the final meeting last season in Wichita. (AP)   Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer, Kelly Johnson also went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the bumbling Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Monday night to complete a four-game sweep.  The Blue Jays improved to 6-1 on the road this season, while Kansas City lost its 11th straight to finish up a winless 10-game homestand.  The Royals became the first team to lose its first 10 at home since the Chicago Cubs dropped 12 in a row at Wrigley Field in 1994.  Eric Hosmer scored the Royals’ only run with a homer leading off…

More details regarding a zebra, discovered southwest of Manhattan KMAN news first told you about early this morning. Riley County Police indicate they received a call of a zebra-at large just before one Tuesday morning. The animal had been located at White Tail Pass and reportedly was from the McDowell Creek Road area. Manhattan Animal control officer Lynn Schumacher tells KMAN she was contacted at 2 a.m.Tuesday by RCPD, who indicated they had no way to transport the animal or a place to house the animal. A nominating commission charged with naming candidates to fill a district judge vacancy in the 21st Judicial District has issued a request for assistance from the public. The 21st Judicial District includes Clay and Riley counties. The nine-member commission is responsible for submitting the names of two or three nominees to the Governor for the vacancy which was created by the retirement of Judge Paul E.
