Manhattan High finishes 5th in the Newton Tournament of Champions this weekend, just missing out on a team trophy at the prestigous meet.  Tulsa, Oklahoma Union is nationally ranked, and won the tournament.  Ark City was second, followed by Lawrence, Newton, and Manhattan in the top five. Indian 170 pound wrestler Brian Wood made the finals, but fell to Nick Pursel of Lawrence to finish 2nd.  106 pound Jase Stone was third, 182 pound Trey Campbell and 220 pound Deion Parker were 5th, and 145 pound Davis Matthews and 195 pound Ty Suggs also made the medal stand in 6th.

Riley County police are investigating a shooting in Manhattan, which resulted in the hospitalization of one man and arrest of another. Marcus Cooper was found shot close to the intersection of North Manhattan Avenue and Flint Hills Place, and taken to Mercy Regional Health Center, where he was expected to survive. Tyrell Brown of Flint Hills Place was arrested on two counts of attempted second degree murder. The call to police came from Clayton Burgess, who was also found to be a victim in the case. For the second time in 11 days, the Kansas State Women’s Basketball team defeated a Top 10 team and in process stayed unbeaten in Big 12 play. Jalana Childs scored 23 points including the game-winning free throws and the Wildcats withstood three chances by Texas Tech for the winning basket in the final 20 seconds as K-State knocked off the 10th-ranked Red Raiders 62-61 Saturday afternoon at United Spirit Arena.  K-State, after falling behind 7-2 out of the gate outscored Tech 35-20 to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room at intermission.  However, Texas Tech stormed out in the…

The Kansas State Wildcats fell into an early 7-0 hole and never could climb all the way back out as Oklahoma got its first Big 12 win with an 82-73 victory Saturday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center. K-State, which trailed 38-29 at halftime fell behind by as many as 14 points in the second half but clawed back to within six points at 79-73 with less than a minute to go.  However with all of their timeouts spent, the Wildcats were forced to foul OU and the Sooners made three free throws down the stretch to seal the win.…

The body of a Junction City man was found  by police Thursday morning. According to Junction City police reports at 0646 officers from the JCPD responded to 225 North Madison apartment 11 in reference to a check welfare call. Upon arriving at the residence the officers gained entrance into the apartment, and found 47-year-old Joseph Dirks dead from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy is scheduled at a later date.

Predicting the warning and pre-warning needs of Wildcat Creek was a topic examined by the local Wilcat Creek working Group Thursday evening. Co-Chair Rich Jankovich tells KMAN the meetings continue to raise interest by members of the public, with a large crowd turning out. Jankovich adds work has begun on creek measurements with measuring gauges at Scenic Drive and Seth Child Bridge in place and being calibrated right now.
