Signs were discussed at length by Wamego City commissioners at their first meeting of the new year Tuesday night. City Manager Merl Page told commissioners City staff needed to do maintenance on wooden utility poles, but had to clear lots of obscure signs placed by the public and some businesses. He jokingly said there was so much metal in the poles he was surprised they weren’t stuck by lightening. In checking the City’s manuals, they found there were no stipulations concerning the wooden utility poles, so an agreement was drafted and approved by the Commissioner’s. The sales tax collections have been tallied for December and things seem to be presenting a positive outlook for 2012 so far. This year’s number has shown a 5.6% increase from last year, leaving the total at $895,505. With this increase, it shows the amount to be about $56,000 above the budget. Bernie Hayen, Manhattan Finance Director, is hopeful that the comparable holiday season from last year to this will also present positive numbers. There was one note of caution to go along with the numbers. Wal-Mart included two extra weeks of retail sales into their receipts, which inflated the total a little.
Before embarking on his K-State career, Manhattan High’s Deante Burton will play one more high school football game. Burton has been selected to play for the West squad in the 39th Kansas Shrine Bowl this July. Burton was a two-year starter and had 20 receptions this season for 327 yards and five touchdowns. He also picked off a pair of passes anchoring the Indians’ secondary. Lining up across from Burton on the East squad will be Rock Creek’s Logan Miner. The preliminary trial for Domingo Soto has been set for the 20th of January at 1 pm in Riley County court. Soto has been charged with aiding and abetting the 1st degree murder of Steve Freele, and possession of drugs with the intent to distribute. Soto is currently incarcerated at the Riley County detention facility.
Riley County Police are now saying a Friday case in which two bodies were found was an apparent murder/suicide. Officers were called to 715 Yuma street after a concerned citizen notified them of finding two deceased individuals. Police arrived to find Kawon Higgins,26, and 23 year old Amanda Bonner’s bodies at the scene. According to RCPD reports released Tuesday morning an autopsy has been completed, and the results indicate that the incident appears to be a murder/suicide with Higgins as the aggressor. Higgins and Bonner had children together and the deaths appear to be related to an ongoing domestic situation.…
New information has come forward on the drive-by shooting at 1827 Fairlane that occurred in the early morning hours on New Years Day. The drive-by shooting resulted in the death of Frederick Beverly, 21, of Manhattan. The location is now being identified as a clubhouse for the motorcycle group “Assassin Street Rydaz”. The preliminary investigation indicates only one shooter in incident, and the vehicle used was described as a blue, newer model Chevrolet, with 22 inch chrome rims. Not a blip was registered nationally for K-State basketball at the start of the season. But, everyone has taken notice of the Cats after an 11-1 start and a Diamond Head Classic championship. K-State cracked the Associated Press’ Top 25 for the first time this week after their 82-46 win over Howard on Saturday. The Cats check in at #23 in the nation.
