Friday morning saw the National Research Council’s public hearing on risk assessments associated with the National Bio- and Agro Defense Facility. The hearing was held in Mosier hall, and council members asked pointed questions about the new facility’s ability to handle possible out breaks of diseases like hoof and mouth disease. Council members also seemed concerned about the interaction between the facility and surrounding area emergency operations. Riley County Police responded to the reports of a possible suicidal soldier early Friday morning. According to RCDP Lieutenant Josh Kyle, officers received a report of a break-in on Crestwood Drive Thursday afternoon around 4:30, where the victim heard one shot being fired. The suspect then quickly surrendered to RCPD officers uninjured and without incident Friday morning around 8:45. Kyle says it was later determined that the suicidal person had intentionally fired the handgun in an unsuccessful attempt to harm himself. Starting Wednesday of next week, Kansas State University will begin to remove the contents of the Old Chemical Waste Landfill. The landfill, located north of Bill Snyder Family Stadium near Kimball Avenue, is where the university chemical waste was disposed of in the 1960s and 1970s, as was the standard practice for universities throughout the U.S. Removal and disposal is expected to last 45 days, according to Kelly Greene, the university’s environmental manager. Governor Sam Brownback will be making a stop in Manhattan in the very near future. Brownback will be a guest at the bi-monthly Riley County Republican Breakfast, Feb. 4. The breakfast is at 9:00 that Saturday morning at the Holiday Inn, on Campus. As KMAN news announced Tuesday, Pottawatomie County Commissioner Pat Weixelman recently filed for re-election. Weixelman says experience has helped him. “I feel like I’ve had pretty good luck the last three years, ” he said. “Haven’t had too many calls chewing me out or anything like that.” Weixelman adds his business experience is also a factor. “Been in business for over 25 years,” Weixelman said. “I would like to think I know enough to keep things running.
