BY JIM SALTER The police chief who led the raid of a Kansas newspaper alleged in previously unreleased court documents a reporter either impersonated someone else or lied about her intentions when she obtained the driving records of a local business owner. But reporter Phyllis Zorn, Marion County Record Editor and Publisher Eric Meyer and the newspaper’s attorney said Sunday that no laws were broken when Zorn accessed a public state website for information on restaurant operator Kari Newell. BY DAVID BRANDT GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City’s first-team offense didn’t play well during its first few series Saturday night, dropping a few passes, committing a few penalties and coming up well short of the end zone. The Chiefs responded with a 10-play, 92-yard drive that ended in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson and Kansas City was on…

(AP) — A central Kansas police chief was not only on legally shaky ground when he ordered the raid of a weekly newspaper, experts said, but it may have been a criminal violation of civil rights, a former federal prosecutor added, saying: “I’d probably have the FBI starting to look.” Some legal experts believe the Aug. 11 raid on the Marion County Record’s offices and the home of its publisher violated a federal privacy law that protects journalists from having their newsrooms searched. Some believe it violated a Kansas law that makes it more difficult…
A candidate seeking a seat on the Manhattan-Ogden School board recently came under fire for comments he made at a forum hosted by Pottawatomie County Republican Women on Aug. 13. According to the Manhattan Mercury, Frank Beer confirmed using the word ‘contagion’ when referring to a question about the LGBTQ community at the forum, labeling kids’ interest in LGBTQ ideology as a “social contagion,” basing his opinion on the growing number of students claiming to be part of the community because it’s the ‘cool kids’ club.’ Beer clarified in a phone call late Friday to KMAN that he was misquoted…
