Authorities are investigating after an unknown suspect drove into a corn field Sunday afternoon, just south of the airport near the intersection of West 56th Avenue and South 28th Street. According to the Riley County Police Department, the suspect vehicle not only damaged crops, but also struck an irrigation system, causing an estimated $500 in damage. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.

Officers filed a report for burglary of a motor vehicle in the 400 block of Clydesdale Dr. on September 15, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m. A 28-year-old man was listed as a victim when he reported his vehicle was burglarized by an unknown person and items were taken.  Stolen were Adidas and Under Armour bags, sports equipment, a laptop computer, and medical equipment. The total loss amount was estimated at around $800. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers. Gamma Omicron of Epsilon Sigma Alpha had their Inaugural Charity 0.5K Slug Run this weekend to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Judy Ahrens, the event co-chair, talked about Epsilon Sigma Alpha’s fundraising. Ahrens said the event was inspired by the desire to hold a fundraiser run that was easy for anyone accomplish. A 0.5K is exactly 1,000 steps, and participants were able to walk to course and stop for donuts provided by Hy-Vee, kolaches, or protein provided by Raising Cane’s along the way. A Manhattan man was arrested on Friday morning for damage to property. 32-year-old Gregory Hayes was arrested at 6:00 am in the 1210 block of Yuma Street for one count of criminal destruction and one count of violating a protection order. Hayes was booked into Riley County Jail and was later released on a $3,000 bond.

Kansas has canceled its fall turkey hunting season, state officials announced Friday, amid a decline in turkey populations across the Midwest and Southeast. Kansas has documented “consistent declines” in turkey populations over the last 15 years, the state’s Department of Wildlife and Parks said in a statement. That’s because fewer turkeys are reaching adulthood in Kansas and other states, said Kent Fricke, the department’s small game biologist. Possible reasons include turkey habitat destruction from urbanization and habitat loss from extreme weather events like drought and flooding.
