(AP) — Transgender people born in Kansas could be prevented from changing their birth certificates to reflect their gender identities if the state’s conservative Republican attorney general is successful with a legal move he launched late Friday. Attorney General Kris Kobach filed a request in federal court asking a judge to end a requirement for Kansas to allow transgender people to change their birth certificates. He is not seeking to undo past changes, only prevent them going forward. The 2023 class of Mandela Washington Fellows arrived in Manhattan this week. An opening ceremony was held Friday at the Staley School of Leadership. The 25 leaders from sub-Saharan Africa will take part in a 6-week program under K-State’s Institute in Civic Engagement. Program Academic Coordinator Jess Ramirez says the program is an opportunity to collaborate, network and find creative solutions. A Junction City man accused in a March double murder was arraigned this week in Geary County District Court. Online court records show 33-year-old Steven Pierce pleaded guilty on June 9 to two charges of first-degree murder, pursuant to a plea agreement. A sentencing hearing has been deferred to a later date. A status hearing is scheduled for July 13. Pierce is charged with the murders of 75-year-old Valerie Krissman and her husband, 80-year-old Roland Krissman. The couple was found dead March 18. USD 383 celebrated the departure of Superintendent Dr. Marvin Wade and Director of Business Services Lew Faust with a joint retirement party Thursday at the Robinson Education Center. Wade has spent the last seven years serving as superintendent for the Manhattan-Ogden schools, and Faust stepped into the role of Director of Business Services 12 years ago.
