Officers responded to the report of a vehicle fire and an injury crash near the intersection of Tuttle Creek Blvd. and Marlatt Ave. in Manhattan on June 13, 2023, around 9:15 a.m. After arriving on scene, officers found a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rodney Dugan, 48, of Leonardville had stopped while traveling eastbound on Tuttle Creek Blvd. when he drove upon a 2002 Chrysler Concorde driven by Steven Cortez, 25, of Ellinwood that was on fire. The Manhattan City Commission has one item on the work session agenda tonight, discussing the city’s 2023 year to date analysis and the 2024 budget. Commissioners will also receive an overview of the Capital Improvement Program. The board will review the city’s financials and provide feedback on items such as the city’s seven major revenue sources, general fund expenditures, the city’s debt, cash balances, the revenue neutral rate and use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The Flint Hills Discovery Center hosted the 13th annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest on Friday. The finals were divided into serious and humorous categories, and poets ranged in age and experience. Winner of the serious category, Kye Rieff has only competed three times but says Cowboy Poetry contests are a space that he feels comfortable sharing with his kids and family. The Riley County Police Department has released more details regarding a Monday motorcycle crash that sent one person to the hospital. Authorities say 21-year-old Parker Pre-Genzer, of Junction City, had been riding northbound on Hwy 13 with a group of motorcycles when he attempted to turn left on his bike, while riding next to 20-year-old Pedro Pedroza, of Wichita. The two collided at the intersection of Tuttle Cove Road. Pre-Genzer was transported to Ascension Via Christi with minor injuries. A nationally known retailer is coming to Manhattan. Burlington will occupy the former Bed Bath and Beyond space in the Manhattan Marketplace shopping center, at 425 Third Place. The former closed earlier this year after the company filed for bankruptcy. Burlington was known for many years as Burlington Coat Factory, but rebranded in recent years. The company has begun advertising for positions locally. An opening date has not been announced.

A Riley County man appeared in court today in relation to a pair of charges involving a May 2021 incident where he was accused of sexual battery towards an unnamed victim. Martin Vogts has been charged with aggravated sexual battery and aggravated battery. He had previously pleaded not guilty to both counts. Vogts and his attorney Barry Clark appeared via Zoom before Judge Grant Bannister on Monday to set up a jury trial which is expected to begin in early-October. A pre-trial has been set for the end of September as well.
