MANHATTAN, KS — The Riley County Police Department reported five arrests over the weekend, according to the department’s latest media arrest summary released Sunday morning. Among those detained was 32-year-old Javontae Dashon Darby of Manhattan, who was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. on May 18. Darby faces charges of shoplifting items valued under $1,500 and possessing tools to remove theft detection devices. He remains confined at the Riley County Jail with a bond set at $3,000. Kansas State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has added a frontcourt piece to the 2025-26 roster, as Jenessa Cotton has signed with the Wildcats. White, a 6-foot-2 forward from Orange, California, played her first collegiate season in 2024-25 at Duke. She saw action in eight games with 44 minutes played. Manhattan High track and field came away with two team Centennial League titles Thursday in Junction City. In total, the Indians earned 28 all-league first team honors and 13 second-team results with eight landing honorable mention. The Manhattan High girls swept all three relay races, starting with the state-record holding 4×100 team of Harli Omli, Hanna Pellant, Sarah Oberreuter and Michelle Jeje, who took first with a time of 46.9, .6 seconds slower than their top time. Officers filed 21 reports, including an injury accident in the 700 block of Bluemont Avenue and several non-injury collisions throughout the city. Other notable incidents included battery reports, larcenies at multiple locations including Best Buy and Countryside Parks, criminal damage to property, and a violation of a court order. Aggieville business owners want the public to know business remains open, as they prepare for a major construction project. Manhattan Public Works crews will begin construction at the intersection of 12th and Moro on Monday, resulting in a 30 day closure of Moro between 11th and 12th Street to all vehicular traffic. A truck driver has been arrested in connection to a Thursday morning fatality accident involving a pedestrian. Officers were called out just before 6 a.m. Thursday to the 700 block of South 4th Street in Manhattan for a hit-and-run accident, involving a cattle truck. Arriving officers discovered the body of a 32-year-old man at the scene, but have not released his name. Further details regarding his death weren’t provided. On Thursday, the RCPD director presented county officials with the past month’s crime report. “For vehicle burglaries, we were about 56 percent below the five-year average,” said Brian Peete, the RCPD director. “This was the fourth-consecutive five-year low for vehicle burglaries since December 2024, which had the second-highest reports of the last five years.
