Lewis Marien – lmarien@themercury.com Manhattan High volleyball is going to state for a third straight season. The Indians (27-8) punched their ticket after straight-set sweeps of Wichita-Haysville Campus and Derby during a sub-state tournament Saturday afternoon in the MHS gym. “We’re really happy,” head coach Nicole Jones said. “I just said, ‘We just got to come out; business as usual, compete, don’t underestimate anybody.’ … I thought they competed really well, we had some moments that we were kind of faltering, but they figured it out and minimized their errors, and they did a great job.” Jones said during those…

LAWRENCE — It’s funny how a little disrespect, intentional or not, can go a long way in college football. And it may have been just that which helped power Kansas State to a 42-17 win over Kansas on Saturday in Lawrence. Even though K-State was looking for its 17th straight victory in the Sunflower Showdown, because of a less-than-stellar start to the season, the Wildcats came into the game as an underdog for the first time since the opening game of the streak back in 2009. Chatter in the air suggested that the end of the streak was nigh, and…
Tim Everson – teverson@themercury.com LAWRENCE — The streak lives. After fighting through a rough first half of the season, Kansas State football continues to look like the team Wildcat fans were expecting to take the field back in August, and that showed in Saturday’s 42-17 win over rival Kansas at the newly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. The win is K-State’s 17th in a row, stretching back to the start of Bill Snyder’s second tenure in 2009. The Wildcats (4-4, 3-2 Big 12) have now won two straight games this season and three of their last four.…

TOPEKA — Manhattan High football capped its regular season with a statement win, dominating Washburn Rural 43-0 on Friday night at Bowen-Glaze Stadium. It marked Manhattan’s first road win in the series since a 32-31 overtime thriller in 2020 — and redemption for a 35-28 loss in its last trip to the Junior Blues’ home field. Turnovers proved costly in that game, and protecting the football had been a point of emphasis in big moments all year. This time, the Indians delivered, playing a clean, physical brand of football from start to finish. Senior quarterback Finn Watson led the way…
