Gas prices jumped again on Friday in the Manhattan area as the country deals with the highest prices on record. Across the city, a gallon of regular is now anywhere from $4.49 to $4.59, while the national average sits at $4.85, according to AAA. As bad as gas prices have been, diesel prices have been much more severe, with the national average for a gallon at $5.63, according to AAA. Riley County commissioners approved amendments to the Preliminary and Final Development Plans associated with an existing Agri-Business Planned Unit Development in the county. The business in question is Liquid Art Winery, owned by David and Danielle Tegtmeier. The property is on Wildcat Creek Road near Scenic Drive. The amendments include a new single family residence, conversion of an existing building into a restaurant, an amphitheater, expanded parking, and cabins. With National Donut Day falling on Friday, June 3rd, one Manhattan business expects to see sales drastically increase in celebration of the holiday. Varsity Donuts is celebrating their 10th National Donut Day since the store opened. For Friday only, the bakery will be giving away one free classic donut per customer. Varsity’s Manager Melisa Cross spoke to KMAN on Friday about the changes that were made to the store’s production process in preparation for the event. In addition to larger donut sales, Varsity’s assistant manger Addie Terrill said that there are other things that make the day special.
Construction at the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility has now completed. The estimated $1.25 billion project has been in the works for over a decade, with sitework starting in 2010 and construction officially commencing in 2013. Kansas was named as the location for the biosafety level-4 [BSL-4] laboratory in late 2008, which will replace the circa 1954 Plum Island Animal Research Center in New York as the United States’ premier animal disease research installation. The USA Special Olympic Games start next week, and the unified volleyball team from Manhattan earned a spot in this year’s games. Manhattan will compete against teams from all over the United States. WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities say a shooting at a graduation party in Wichita left two teenagers dead. One of the victims succumbed to a gunshot wound and the other was hit by a vehicle while fleeing the scene. Police say the events unfolded after an argument Saturday night between two groups. The shooting victim, a 17-year-old Wichita boy, was taken to a nearby a hospital where he died. A 15-year-old girl fleeing the scene of the shooting was struck by a car. She later died at a hospital. OLATHE, Kan. — A Missouri man has been convicted of killing a woman he was accused of stalking and faces life in prison when he’s sentenced in October. The Kansas City Star reports that a Johnson County jury found 44-year-old Clyde James Barnes Jr., of Kansas City, guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder and other counts in the July 2020 killing of 42-year-old Jessica Smith in her Olathe home. Barnes was also found guilty of aggravated burglary, unlawful tampering with electronic monitoring, criminal threat and violation of a protection order.
