Fort Riley and members of the community gathered at the Post Cemetery this Memorial Day to honor those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. Held at the Post Cemetery, the ceremony paid tribute to all those who died protecting this country. Garrison Commander Colonel William McKannay spoke during the ceremony, highlighting the American flags placed at each grave. The Sunset Cemetery Memorial Day Service opened around 10 a.m. this morning. Following music by the Manhattan Municipal Band, Bob Willette opened with the invocation and attendees were welcomed by Keith Coleman. Harold Randa recited the Gettysburg Address and Angela Coleman read the Address in Flanders Field with the Response delivered by Susan Bergsten. The Memorial Service was delivered by CSM (retired) Roger Beckley and a tribute to deceased veterans led by Bruce Bell. A man was killed and a woman shot and injured Friday night by Saline County police while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for charges including rape. 42-year-old Dustin Vance of Hoisington was declared dead by EMS at the scene after Sheriff’s deputies say Vance drew his handgun after refusing officer’s commands. A 41-year-old Salina woman nearby was also shot in the incident, and is said to be in stable condition and expected to recover. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rookie Bobby Witt Jr. delivered three more doubles for his second straight three-hit game and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-3 Saturday. The Manhattan Area Habitat for Humanity broke ground Friday morning in Ogden on its 31st home project, one that boasts the ability to produce as much power as it consumes. Coined Build 31 and located at 201 S. Elm Street across the street from Ogden Elementary, in the spot where a deteriorated structure once stood. AAA Kansas is forecasting a strong return to travel this Memorial Day weekend, both at the national and state levels. Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward says they are projecting around 39.2 million Americans traveling this weekend, an increase of 8.3 percent from one year ago. “We’re looking at almost 329,000 Kansans traveling more than 50 miles from their homes and that’s up 10 percent over last year’s numbers.
