Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo informed the county commission Thursday that due to overcrowding in the Riley County Jail, a second nurse is being requested by the Riley County Police Department. Last month, it was reported that the jail averaged around 124 inmates in August, the highest average on record. That figure is now approximately 140 inmates. Vargo says funds would have to come out of the Riley County budget as it contracts with a third party to provide nursing services. Riley County is statutorily required to provide those costs as its not an expense outlined in the RCPD budget.…

Officers filed a report for motor vehicle theft in the 500 block of Colorado Street in Manhattan on October 5, 2023, around 8:04 AM. Officers listed a 39-year-old female as the victim when she reported an unknown suspect took her white 2005 Toyota Sequoia. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000. (AP) — A 25-year-old homeless man was charged Thursday in the rape and killing of a 5-year-old Kansas girl who died despite firefighters’ efforts to save her life in a gas station parking lot. Riley County Police arrested a 19-year-old Manhattan man Wednesday on a past Pottawatomie County warrant. Phillip Ikya was arrested on two misdemeanor counts of lewd and lascivious behavior. According to an online criminal complaint, the charges stem from an Aug. 22 incident where Ikya allegedly exposed himself to two males who were at least 16 or older. Ikya was issued a $10,000 bond, but was no longer listed as of Thursday’s activity report.
