Riley County is reporting 8 new COVID cases in the past week. Along with the new cases, there are 25 additional recoveries from last week. Those new cases are the only reported active cases in the county. Ascension Via Christi has reported they are caring for zero COVID positive patients at this time. Percent positive information is no longer available as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Authorities say a man shot and killed a woman and later was found dead inside a Kansas home with their slain toddler after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that police in Baxter Springs responded around 7:15 p.m. Saturday to a call from a woman asking for help. When officers arrived, 37-year-old Eli Crawford shot and killed 27-year-old Taylor Dawn Shutte as she exited the home. WICHITA, Kan. — A Kansas woman who pleaded guilty to being drunk when she caused a crash that killed her 5-year-old daughter has been sentenced to three years’ probation. Television station KSNW reports that Nory Lam was sentenced last week after pleading guilty in January to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence. Police investigators say Lam was behind the wheel of her sport utility vehicle around 3 a.m. on March 7, 2021, when she went off the road and crashed. WICHITA, Kan. — Wildlife officials say one of two flamingos that escaped from a Kansas zoo during a storm 17 years ago has been spotted on the coast of Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials confirmed Tuesday that the African flamingo, known as No. 492 because of the number on its leg band, was seen near Port Lavaca, Texas. An environmental activist shot video March 10 that featured the bird with the leg band visible. The bird and another flamingo had not yet had their wings clipped when they escaped from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita in June 2005.…

The Flint Hills Breadbasket is holding their 27th annual “Take a Swing at Hunger” golf tournament. The Flint Hills Breadbasket is a community food network that was founded inside a small shed which housed machinery for the city of Manhattan in 1983. Since then, they have grown and continue to offer much needed food assistance through community donations and volunteer support. Riley County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution to appoint an interim county appraiser. Assistant County Appraiser Danny Williams will serve in the interim role until a permanent candidate is hired. The position was left vacant after the passing of Greg McHenry last month. State statute requires the commission appoint an interim in the position since it is an elected position. “That can be for a period of up to six months. Standards are very different.
