Downtown Manhattan Inc is bringing more artwork to the downtown area with the installation of two new art galleries on Poyntz Avenue. Downtown Manhattan Art Coordinator Heather Hnizdil. Hnizdil says the 409 Gallery is now open to the public and currently taking submissions from local artists. Downtown Manhattan Executive Director Gina Snyder says the new galleries fit well with the organization’s overall mission for the community. The Underground Collective Gallery is not currently open, but Hnizdil anticipates artwork will be installed by the end of next week. Artwork can be submitted at www.downtownmhk.com.

The City of Manhattan is continuing forward with various construction projects along Highway 24 East of Manhattan. City Manager Ron Fehr says there has been significant progress with the work being done on the US 24 and Levee Drive intersection. Fehr says residents can also expect workers to begin laying pavement on US 24 as far east as Excel Road. Fehr also notes the city is looking for consultants to assist with the US 24 East Manhattan Gateway Study to update the comprehensive plan and find ways to address land use and infrastructure issues as the area continues to develop.

During their Tuesday meeting, Manhattan City Commissioners voted to return a rezoning request for 407 Pottawatomie Avenue back to the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board for further consideration. The request from Midwest Concrete Materials failed to earn approval from the Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board in a three to three vote during their May 25th meeting. MCM Owner Chris Eichman told commissioners the company hopes to rezone the approximately 1.22 acre tract of land for business commercial use and construct a training center.
