Riley County Community Corrections has recruited 11 new households for its protective home program. In January, community corrections hosted a series of classes for new home participants. When background checks and home investigations are completed, Riley County could have a total of 24 protective homes. These volunteers must complete a certification process that includes eight hours of training, a background check, and a home inspection. This program provides temporary placement of children who are in Police Protective Custody (PPC) because of abuse and/or neglect. More than $600,000 was raised last week to increase mental health services for K-State students. Through its annual one-day All In for K-State campaign, alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends donated from as far away as Canada and the United Kingdom, according to a release from the university foundation. Two people were injured in Manhattan after shots were fired in a Sunday morning domestic altercation, according to Riley County police. 37-year-old Ryan Powell was arrested after the incident on two counts of aggravated battery and assault, as well as three counts of aggravated endangerment of a child. Powell is accused of firing shots Sunday in the 3000 block of Kimball Ave., hitting a 23-year-old man in the leg and grazing a 21-year-old woman. K-State Student Union’s Forum Hall was host Saturday to Sanskriti, an event celebration Indian culture with an assortment of performances. The annual outing is organized by the Indian Students Association at Kansas State, featuring diverse art, music and dance from across the 28 States and 8 territories of India. Performances included classical dance by the Nartan Academy of Dance, founded in Overland Park in 1998, Odissi dance originating from the Eastern State of Odisha, a dance arrangement set to an medley of Bollywood songs and more. Eighty-five people participated in Manhattan’s Polar Plunge Saturday, raising about $16,000 for Special Olympics Kansas. The fundraiser returned to Tuttle Creek State Park for the 2022 observance, having previously shifted to Bill Snyder Family Stadium in 2021. Manhattan is one of 11 Kansas cities participating in the event, a key fundraiser to support the local Manhattan Sports Club team. Now a year in existence, the Douglass Activity Center celebrated its first birthday Thursday with a spread of snacks and friendly conversation. The Douglass Activity Center is the newest addition to the Frederick Douglass Recreation Complex on Manhattan’s Downtown Yuma Street, opening in March of 2021. The project was approved in 2019 by the Manhattan City Commission, an addition to a community space that historically served as the focal point of Manhattan’s Black community. “I’m happy about it,” says Douglass Center Advisory Board Vice Chair Constance Birdsong, one of numerous people who stopped by the Douglass Activity Center to celebrate.…
As mental health continues to fill headlines and be a growing concern for many, Pawnee Mental Health Services continues to provide for the Manhattan area. One of the largest fundraisers for Pawnee Mental Health wrapped up earlier this month with the Pancakes for Pawnee event.
