Aggieville’s popular Fill the ‘Ville with Green Road Race enjoyed a record setting 1,500 participants Saturday morning, despite the bitter cold wind. It’s Manhattan’s oldest running event, and a home-town man crossed the finish line at 32 minutes 14 seconds, winning the 10K. Joe Moore says he moved away for awhile but again lives in the area. Cheers could be heard from outside Anthony Recreation Center Friday as fans cheered on Special Olympic athletes during the annual Special Olympics Kansas State Basketball Tournament. In addition to basketball games, Special Olympics Kansas Sports and Program Manager Krystin Guggisberg said the tournament involves other activities as well. Additionally, the athletes can stay overnight at the Four Points by Sheraton and attend a banquet and celebratory dance Friday night. Authorities are investigating a case of forgery and theft by deception after a pair of local businesses reported Thursday that several forged checks were cashed at banks across the region. The Riley County Police Department says a 44-year old male suspect altered checks appearing to be from Cat Cans Portable Services and cashed them at four separate Kansas State Bank locations in Riley, Geary and Pottawatomie counties. The estimated total loss is over $17,000. Officers also filed a report for forgery and theft by deception listing Community First Bank and a 59-year-old man as victims when the same suspect forged…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislators aren’t likely to legalize marijuana for medical uses this year following a vote Thursday. A Senate committee tabled a bill that would allow doctors to sign off on patients using marijuana products to treat 21 illnesses or conditions, including cancer, epilepsy, spinal cord injuries or chronic pain, starting in July 2024. Committee Chair Mike Thompson, a Shawnee Republican, said he has no plans to bring the bill back up this year. Thirty-seven states allow the medical use of marijuana, including Oklahoma and Arkansas.
