Earlier this week, K-State Credit Union presented a check totaling $7,200 to Big Lakes Developmental Center. Riley County Commissioners unanimously approved the low bid from Schultz Construction totaling $799,000 for the north Riley County EMS station project. It’s estimated the project will take about eight months to construct and may take up to 46 weeks for delivery and installation of the backup generator. Commission Chair Kathryn Focke questioned whether that will delay the start of the project. Public Works Director John Ellerman says it won’t. Commissioner John Ford says he was pleased with the bidding process. Construction is expected to start sometime later this spring.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature gave final approval Thursday to a ban on transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports, and they appear for now to have the votes to override the Democratic governor’s expected veto. The state Senate voted 28-11 to approve the bill, which would impose the ban for K-12, college and club sports, starting July 1. It next goes to Gov. Laura Kelly, as the state House approved it two weeks earlier on an 82-40 vote. Kelly vetoed two previous versions of the ban.
