Manhattan City Commissioners unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the McCall Road Landing Planned Development Unit to allow for construction of a new Culver’s restaurant. The restaurant, which will provide both dine-in and drive-through services, will reside at the corner of McCall Road and McCullough Place, south of Menard’s. A project timeline was not provided. Additionally, the board approved USD 383’s request to relieve an island landscaping requirement set forth in the Manhattan Development Code for the Bluemont Elementary School parking lot. The Board of Riley County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to deny a request from Evergy Inc. to construct an electrical switching station west of the McDowell Creek Road and Konza Prairie Lane intersection, on the north side. County Planner Bob Isaac says the switching station would provide improved electrical services to members of the community. The second annual Run for the Roses to benefit the Kansas State University Gardens saw a generous turnout Saturday including celebrity runners and walkers, taking advantage of a good spring weather morning. Jan Pishny and husband Lyle from Stillwell drove in Friday and Pishny finished first in her age group, but says she was more impressed with the gardens than her own accomplishment. “This garden is so beautiful. I’m glad they’re doing some renovations to it. It’s something they should showcase for the whole community,” she said.
