After 42 years of service to the public, Riley County Police Department Director Dennis Butler is officially retiring. Monday will be his last day on duty. Butler began his policing career in 1979 when he was hired as a cadet. After about a year, he went to the academy and was hired as a police officer in 1980. Through his many years of service, Butler says he has made many memories and has seen a change in policing. Implementation of Manhattan’s new strategic plan was the focus of a day of discussion at the city commission’s annual retreat Friday. The commission retreat is an annual outing where elected officials and city administrators discuss key goals and organizational focus at the start of the year. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s COVID testing site will soon be moving to an indoor facility. Riley County commissioners Thursday approved a lease agreement with the health department to move the testing site to 3019 Anderson Ave, in the Plaza West Shopping Center. Pawnee Mental Health Services are excited about a multi-million dollar federal grant awarded to the organization in Fall of 2021. Executive Director Robbin Cole discussed the SAMHSA Community Mental Health Centers grant program with KMAN Thursday. Pawnee was awarded nearly $4.75 million through the program, intended to expand access to mental health support amid the COVID 19 pandemic. “That grant has given us some funding to help expand services to individuals who have severe mental illnesses, children with serious emotional disturbances” and more, according to Cole. TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas is moving quickly to offer $1 billion or more in tax breaks and other incentives in hopes of landing what officials promise is an investment of up to $4 billion. The bill also includes an across-the-board cut in corporate income taxes. State officials have not disclosed the project or identified the company, saying those who have received details were required to sign non-disclosure agreements. TOPEKA, Kan. — Green energy companies and environmentalists are fighting renewed efforts in the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature to impose stricter limits on wind turbines and solar farms. It’s happening in a state where renewable resources account for nearly half the state’s capacity for generating electricity. The state Senate Utilities Committee and another panel had hearings on bills backed by Utilities Committee Chair Mike Thompson and some property owners upset with wind turbines going up near their homes. Thompson is a conservative Shawnee Republican who is skeptical of renewable energy.
