MANHATTAN, Kansas (K-State Athletics) – K-State women’s basketball will enter its 2023-24 season with high expectations, as the Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll has ranked the Wildcats in fourth-place in an announcement by the league office on Thursday. This is the second time under the direction of head coach Jeff Mittie that K-State has been slated in fourth in the preseason coaches poll, joining the 2020-21 preseason poll. (AP) — A 25-year-old homeless man was charged Thursday in the rape and killing of a 5-year-old Kansas girl who died despite firefighters’ efforts to save her life in a gas station parking lot. Mickel Cherry faces one count of capital murder — which would allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty — and one count each of first-degree murder and rape in the death of Zoey Felix on Monday. Riley County Police arrested a 19-year-old Manhattan man Wednesday on a past Pottawatomie County warrant. Phillip Ikya was arrested on two misdemeanor counts of lewd and lascivious behavior. According to an online criminal complaint, the charges stem from an Aug. 22 incident where Ikya allegedly exposed himself to two males who were at least 16 or older. Ikya was issued a $10,000 bond, but was no longer listed as of Thursday’s activity report.

Officers responded to the report of an injury crash near the intersection of Gary Avenue and North Seth Child Road in Manhattan on October 4, 2023, around 9:38 AM. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 2019 Gray Honda Odyssey driven by Paola Ames, 36, had crashed with a 2010 Maroon Honda Pilot driven by Michael Beebe, 61. Ames was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign. Beebe was issued a citation for no driver’s license. Senior Gabby Gregory was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, while senior Ayoka Lee was named to the team for the third time in her career. Junior Serena Sundell was an honorable mention recipient to the preseason squad. Dr. John Mather, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Senior Project Scientist for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), gave a presentation to Kansas State University students on Tuesday. Dr. Mather discussed the historical background of telescopes and cosmology, and the work of JWST in studying distant objects to explore the origins of the universe. Mather explained that the farther away the object being studied is, the farther “back in time” scientists travel thanks to physics and the monumental distances between the deep-space points of study and the telescopes studying them. A local district magistrate judge was injured Tuesday evening in a crash in northern Riley County. According to the Riley County Police Department, officers were called out just after 5:30 p.m. for a single vehicle crash in the 6000 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. Police say 74-year-old William Malcolm, of Clay Center, was injured after his truck left the road and crashed. Malcolm was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital and then air lifted to Stormont Vail. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
