Jimmy Bond, 71, pleaded guilty to one count of misuse of between $25,000 and $100,000 public funds and one count of official misconduct by submitting false expenses over $25,000. By Rose Gruenbacher The Riley County police board on Monday approved 5-1 a budget increase of 5.41% for 2026. The total increase from 2025 is $1.56 million, for a total budget of $30.34 million. The Manhattan city government pays 80% of the budget, and the Riley County government. This budget reflects one adjustment from the previous approval last month, the agreement between the Riley County Police Department and USD 383 for cost-sharing of the school resource officer program. Manhattan High’s boys golf and girls soccer teams were well-represented in postseason awards following their 2025 campaigns, with multiple Indians earning all-league and all-state recognition. On the course, three MHS golfers were named to the Class 6A All-State team after helping the Indians to a third-place state finish. Micah Brandon Egan, 26, of Manhattan was arrested on June 17, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m. on his Manhattan Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear. This warrant stems from an original charge of driving while suspended. Egan was issued a total bond of $6,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report. A Manhattan man and three others are recovering after a crash on US-77, south of Junction City. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a northbound Mitsubishi Outlander hydroplaned and went into a ditch, right around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. All four occupants sustained only minor injuries, including 31-year-old Derrick Hawkes, of Manhattan. Others involved in the crash were 31-year-old Jeffery Jones, 22-year-old Zed Bryant and 38-year-old Jennifer Wangerin-Smith, all of Herington. All four were treated at a Junction City hospital. Steve Miller, the former Kansas State athletics director who hired hall of fame head coach Bill Snyder, died earlier this week The Mercury has learned. His age and cause of death were unavailable as of press time. “Steve was a dear friend and as is known by so many an extremely successful Administrator,” Snyder told the Mercury. “He had a major impact on the careers of many coaches and athletics directors. Riley County police on Monday arrested a fourth teen suspect in the investigation of an April armed robbery. Rostyn Gage Rothwell, 17, of Hallsville, Texas, turned himself in to RCPD and was arrested for aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon. He is held without bond at the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
