The 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley will deploy approximately 200 Soldiers to the southern border as part of a mission to protect and defend the territorial integrity of the United States. The deployment, directed by the President, will support Customs and Border Protection’s efforts at the border. Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command and Joint Task Force North, the 41st Combat Engineer Company-Armored and the 977th Military Police Company will join the 2,500 forces already stationed at the border. On January 23, 2024, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit, with assistance from the Chapman Police Department, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2500 Block of Nicholson Road in Chapman. The operation was part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. During the search, authorities discovered THC edible products, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and firearms. Two roundabouts are going in on Tuttle Creek Boulevard north of town, with a stretch of the road set to shut down for most of the year starting in April. Kansas Department of Transportation officials on Thursday said work is underway on a roundabout at the junction between Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Kansas Highway 13, which goes over the dam. Meanwhile, construction will start at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Seth Child Road in the coming weeks. Matt Tarleton, an Atlanta-based consultant specializing in community development spoke Friday at the Regional Growth Summit, which is the new name for the Regional Leaders’ Retreat. Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.6% in December. This is an increase from 3.5% in November and an increase from 2.6% in December 2023. Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,200 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.
