The community of Russell and Kansas said their final goodbyes to the late Senator Bob Dole over the weekend. Kansas leaders and politicians were at the service to say their last goodbyes to Dole as well.  Governor Laura Kelly started her speech thanking current and former Kansas senators, saying they are following in the foot prints of Dole. An investigation is underway following an early Sunday morning shooting in Aggieville that left two people hospitalized with injuries. The Riley County Police Department says it heard and responded to the reports of gun shots inside Tate’s Bar in Aggieville shortly before 1:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and a second 24-year-old man suffering from a concussion. Both victims were transported to Ascension Via Christi for treatment. The shooting victim was later life flighted to Stormont Vail Hospital for further treatment. BROOKINGS, South Dakota (Kansas State Athletics) – K-State trailed entering the fourth quarter, but used double-doubles from Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell to finish the come back to win, 79-73, on Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena. K-State (9-2) won consecutive non-conference road games for the first time since December 21 and December 29, 2012, when the Wildcats defeated UNLV and UC Santa Barbara. A 46-person ensemble of tuba, sousaphone and euphonium players brought the holiday spirit to the Manhattan Town Center Saturday. The Manhattan TubaChristmas concert returned in 2021 after a year off due to COVID-19, playing an hour-long set of Christmas-themed songs. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas says it is changing a policy that denied sex reassignment surgery to customers who did not legally change their names. The change announced Thursday comes after advocacy from the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund. They said Charley Osman, a transgender man, sought pre-authorization for two surgeries in June but was denied because he had not changed his name from the one he was given at birth. The advocacy groups argued the name change policy was discriminatory and had nothing to do with medical necessity.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Authorities in south-central Kansas say the pilot of an ultralight plane that crashed near Hutchinson walked away from the wreckage with no serious injuries. Officials say the crash happened just before 5 p.m. Thursday southwest of Hutchinson in Reno County along West Morgan Avenue. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 40-year-old man flying the aircraft was trying to land on the road when he hit power lines. The crash cut power lines, but officials say the pilot suffered only minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.

The registration period for upcoming certification training for the Riley County Protective Home Program has opened. The program, administered by Riley County Community Corrections, provides temporary placement of children in Police Protective Care as a result of abuse and/or neglect. Protective Homes, on very short notice, take in and care for children for up to 72 hours. Interested volunteers must complete a certification process that includes eight hours of training, a background check and a home inspection.
