A St. Marys woman was seriously injured Saturday in an accident in Jackson County. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 56-year-old Carol Jacas was westbound on a rural county road near Highway 75 when she ran a stop sign, striking a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Sierra Phillips. Jacas was transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka with suspected serious injuries. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck. Phillips had five children under 10 in the vehicle with her. On April 5 and April 6, 2025, the Riley County Police Department managed various incidents and arrests. Notable incidents included a battery at an apartment on Vattier Street, an assault on Moro Street, and a criminal threat at Burlington on 3rd Place. By Emma Loura The federal government cut two grants for the Riley County Health Department related to the prevention and treatment of diseases, officials said Thursday. Effective March 24, the federal government discontinued four grants for health departments across Kansas, two of which affect Riley County. All health departments in the state received notices March 26. The last day the funds could be spent was March 24. A federal court has sentenced a Manhattan man to 60 years in prison after he led a conspiracy to produce child pornography. Joel Womochil, 39, a former Burns police chief, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge John Broomes on March 28 for two counts of conspiracy to commit sexual exploitation of a child — production of child pornography. Broomes ordered Womochil to serve a term of 30 years for each count, running consecutively for a total of 60 years, with restitution of $529,000. Sophomore point guard Zyanna Walker, a Wichita native and Louisville transfer, and freshman guard Finley Ohnstad entered the portal Friday morning. The Riley County Police Department made two arrests Thursday, in connection with a robbery and connected shootings on November 30 and December 1 last year. Delron Tyree Jr, 17, of Topeka was arrested on a warrant for charges of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, criminal use of weapons, criminal discharge of a firearm, and three counts of criminal damage to property.
