The Kansas Farm Bureau hosted its annual meeting Sunday, with Gov. Laura Kelly as the key guest speaker. During her speech, Kelly says strengthening rural communities in Kansas has been a critical mission for her administration. She recognizes agriculture is widely tied to the state’s past and future, economically and culturally. Kelly says farmers and ag producers never fail to impress her with their wisdom, kindness, and determination. Riley County commissioners met with area lawmakers to discuss the county’s priorities for the 2022 legislative session. One of the main topics of discussion was the impact of state actions on county dollars. Treasurer Shilo Heger presented the impacts based on dollar loss and mill levies from her office’s point of view. The numbers presented took place from 2002 to 2022. For fiscal year 2022, the loss from the local ad valorem tax reduction is approximately $731,000 which represents around 1.08 mills. USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden Superintendent Dr. Marvin Wade says the district is implementing the Emergency Response Plan to provide support to students, staff members and families following the tragic deaths of two Eisenhower Middle School students and the serious injury of an Anthony Middle School student from an early Sunday morning crash on K-18.
