Area Kansas legislators were mixed in their views of former Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Dr. Lee Norman following the official announcement of his successor Monday. Norman was asked to resign from the top KDHE post and did so on Nov. 19, 2021, after internal disputes with Gov. Kelly’s Chief of Staff Will Lawrence. LENEXA, Kan. — Police in a Kansas suburb of Kansas City are investigating after a man was fatally struck by a train. The Kansas City Star reports that police in Lenexa were called at 8:43 a.m. Monday after a BNSF train struck a pedestrian on the tracks. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No further information was released and it wasn’t immediately clear why the man was on the tracks.
WICHITA, Kan. — Police say a 13-year-old child has been critically injured in an accidental shooting that took place in a south Wichita home. The shooting happened Monday evening, and police say it happened as the child and a 16-year-old brother were playing with a gun that went off. Police say the gunshot hit the younger child in the head. The child was rushed to an area hospital. Police have not released the names of children or their family and say the investigation into the shooting continues.
WICHITA, Kan. — A Wichita man has died two days after a bar fight, and police say the man he fought with is now facing a manslaughter charge. Police say 31-year-old Alonzo Haywood died Sunday from injuries he received in a 2 a.m. Friday fight outside Mulligan’s Pub. Police say Haywood had been arguing with 51-year-old James Elbert Thomas, also of Wichita, when Thomas punched Haywood, causing the younger man to fall to the ground and hit his head. The K-State Department of Agricultural Economics has surpassed its 2 million dollar fundraising goal for the Barry Flinchbaugh Chair in Agricultural Economics. This chair will help contribute to food and agricultural policy across the state and nation in honor of the late Flinchbaugh, who according to current department head Allen Featherstone, dreamed of endowing a chair to build upon the national and state legacy he helped establish. Flinchbaugh died in 2020. The chair will be used to recruit and retain faculty within the Department of Ag Econ and provide risk capital to allow innovative activities in agricultural policy. TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Laura Kelly has appointed a former Topeka hospital executive as the new secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Janet Stanek has most recently been director of the state employee health benefits program. She replaces Dr. Lee Norman, who announced his resignation Nov. 19. He’d been the health department’s top administrator since Kelly took office in January 2019. Kelly’s office said in a Monday news release that Stanek has held healthcare leadership positions in Pennsylvania, New York and Kansas. WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities say a 65-year-old Wellington man is dead after being struck by a car in Wellington. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash was reported at 6:30 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 160 in Wellington. KWCH-TV reports a 2015 Dodge Challenger was traveling east on the inside lane when it hit a man who was running from north to south. The Highway Patrol identified the man who was killed as Chuck E. Flynn of Wellington. The driver and two passengers in the car were not seriously injured.
