STANTON COUNTY, Kan. — A 28-year-old Kansas man died after his SUV rolled into a ditch in the southwest corner of the state. The Kansas Highway Patrol said Bryce Stude of Eudora was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe east on U.S. Highway 160 in Stanton County when the crash happened around 11:40 p.m. Friday. The Highway Patrol said Stude overcorrected after the vehicle left the road, and the SUV rolled several times before landing in the ditch. Stanton County is near the Colorado border in southwestern Kansas.

WICHITA, Kan. — Police in Wichita say one woman has died and another has been wounded in a shooting outside a home. Police say the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday just west of Highland Cemetery following a disturbance. Arriving officers found two women who had been shot in front of a home. Both were rushed to a hospital, where one of the women died from her injuries. Police have not released the women’s names. Wichita Police Lt. Roderick Miller told television station KAKE that investigators were interviewing neighbors and the surviving woman to learn more details of the shooting.

WICHITA, Kan. — A prosecutor says that a Wichita police officer who fatally shot a fleeing bank robbery suspect last year is immune from prosecution under Kansas law. Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett released his findings Thursday into the Dec. 21 death of Paul Peraza following a robbery at the Golden Plains Credit Union in Wichita and the subsequent police chase. He concluded no criminal charges would be filed against the officer. Bennett says the officer’s explanation that he believed Peraza posed a danger to the other officer and the public is supported by the facts.

WICHITA, Kan. — A homeless man will be sentenced in December for killing a 72-year-old Wichita woman who had sometimes provided him with food and a place to stay. Sedgwick County court records show 57-year-old John Darwin Pepper was convicted last week of first-degree murder and criminal sodomy in the July 2019 death of Rita Golden. Prosecutors said Pepper killed Golden during the commission of a sex crime. Police said Golden let Pepper stay in her backyard and sometimes let him take naps and eat insider her home.
