With November being National Native American Heritage month, one Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 school board member is requesting to remove the Manhattan High School Indian mascot. Board Vice President Kristin Brighton brought up the subject during Wednesday’s meeting. Brighton says settling this debate will show the board’s commitment to creating an environment where all cultures are respected, which is hard to do with the mascot. The mascot becomes “the elephant in the room” when discussing diversity related topics. The mascot was introduced in 1940 as a tribute to Coach Frank Prentup, but was originally the Junior Wildcats. Riley County has reported one additional coronavirus-related death in its weekly report. A 67-year old vaccinated woman tested positive on October 18 and passed away on November 2 at Ascension Via Christi hospital. The total number of COVID-related deaths in the county is now at 60. In addition, 41 new positive cases were identified as well as 85 additional recoveries since the last report on October 27. Four COVID-positive patients remain under care at Ascension Via Christi Hospital. Two patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, one whom is fully vaccinated. The fight against the coronavirus pandemic continues. Late Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control authorized an emergency use vaccine for children ages five to eleven years old. Vaccine distribution is already in the works, and Governor Laura Kelly says Kansas will receive 128,000 vaccines. She says she knows how important it is to bring the vaccine to the people, and adds that they have done just that. “Since the pandemic began, we’ve expanded the capacity of vaccinators from 300 to nearly 2,400 providers now, all across 105 counties,” Kelly says.
