K-State was able to hold off Texas Tech in five sets Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum, getting 21 kills apiece from Holly Bonde and Aliyah Carter as the Wildcats took the series opener, 25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 15-12. Bonde and Carter helped K-State (13-7, 4-5 Big 12) to a 70-58 edge in total kills while Carter picked up three kills during a match-ending 5-1 run in the final set. Dozens of residents gathered at Anthony Recreation Center as negotiations continued with the Kansas Gas Service about tree cutting for the Gary Avenue Project. A third public meeting was held to discuss the exposed pipeline near Gary Avenue. Due to the exposed transmission line, Kansas Gas Service has planned a clear-cutting project to rebury the pipeline. The original design of the project involved cutting the entire 100-feet wide easement along the whole length of the forested area, 1100-feet long. Flint Hills Christian School is currently undergoing construction for a new expansion. Board Member Dr. Moni El-Aasar and Director of Advancement Jordan Candido, spoke with KMAN about the latest for the project. Dr. El-Aasar says the scope of the project is to have two classrooms per grade from pre-k to 6th grade. Overall, the project is expected to be around 28 thousand square feet for all of the expansion. GLEN ELDER, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says a suspect in a kidnapping died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a long standoff. The KBI says a 78-year-old man contacted Mitchell County authorities on Saturday to report he had been kidnapped at gunpoint and held for 26 hours by an acquaintance, 59-year-old John Roudybush, of rural Glen Elder. When officers tried to serve a search warrant at Roudybush’s home on Sunday evening, he refused to come out. SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department says a woman has died and two juveniles are critically injured after the truck the woman was driving struck a train near Maize. KWCH-TV reports that the sheriff’s office said the juveniles were passengers in the truck that collided with the train Tuesday afternoon. The railroad crossing has no arms or lights, according to the sheriff’s office. The department is investigating the collision.

DODGE CITY, Kan. — Police in southwestern Kansas say five family members are fighting for their lives after being sickened by carbon monoxide. Police were called Monday to a home in Dodge City, where they encountered thick vehicle exhaust and found five men unconscious and critically ill. Police say all five were quickly removed and taken to hospitals, where they remain in critical condition. Investigators say the poisoning was an accident caused when one of the men left a vehicle running in the home’s closed garage, allowing fumes to fill the home.
