A Manhattan man was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and other charges Friday, following a trial for his role in an October 2019 incident. The Manhattan Mercury reports that Mark Anthony Koch was additionally found guilty of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, burglary and theft. 37-year-old Neta Ambar testified that Koch attacked her at her home and wrapped a cord around her neck. Koch admitted to being high before the incident and was a regular user of methamphetamine. Sentencing is scheduled for 3 p.m. on October 12.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An anti-abortion activist who heads a small hard-right Republican group said he’s offered to pay the expected $229,000 cost of a hand recount of votes from every Kansas county after a decisive statewide vote affirming abortion rights. Mark Gietzen, who leads the group Kansas Republican Assembly, told the Kansas City Star he wants to pay for the recount that Melissa Leavitt, of Colby, requested because he believes it could change the outcome. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita police officer who shot and killed a man during a domestic violence incident will not be charged, Sedgwick County District Attorney Mark Bennett said. The officer, who was a member of the department’s SWAT team, shot Jason Williams, 37, in December 2020 in Riverside after Williams had shot his estranged wife and killed his mother-in-law, 52-year-old Michelle Barr, at a Wichita home.
