ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday dismissed an effort by six Republican-led states to block the Biden administration’s plan to forgive student loan debt for tens of millions of Americans. U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey in St. Louis wrote that because the six states — Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina — failed to establish they had standing, “the Court lacks jurisdiction to hear this case.” Suzanne Gage, spokeswoman for Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, said the states will appeal. Following a month-long investigation, Michael Steere, 26, of Manhattan was arrested yesterday for past sex crimes involving a juvenile female victim known to him. He is charged with three counts each of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child connected to incidents occurring between August 2017 and September 2022. Steere remains confined in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond. Due to the nature of these crimes, no further information will be released.

A California woman was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after rolling her vehicle on Interstate 70 in Riley County. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 54-year-old Cynthia Carmack was westbound on the interstate at around 3:30 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, her car veered to the north shoulder, struck an embankment and rolled. The vehicle also caught fire. The crash occurred near mile marker 319, roughly 20 miles east of Junction City. Carmack, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by LifeStar helicopter to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.
