WICHITA, Kan. — Police say one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a downtown nightclub in Wichita, Kansas. Police say the shooting happened just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Enigma Club & Lounge, and arriving officers found one man fatally shot and five women injured. Police have identified the man killed as 34-year-old Preston Spencer, of Wichita. Police Capt. Jason Stephens identified the suspected shooter as Keshawn Maurice Dawson and said police were still searching for him as of midday Tuesday. A total of seven vehicles sustained damage from an early Tuesday morning fire at an east Manhattan auto repair shop. Shortly after 4 a.m. the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 130 Sarber Lane (Dillon’s) for the report of the smell of smoke and then redirected to A&M Auto Repair at 6th and Fair Lane for the report of a vehicle fire. There, crews found two vehicles on fire in the lot. Five other vehicles also sustained damage. The fire was contained within 10 minutes and no injuries were reported. Riley County commissioners have approved the 2022 budget for publication, with a lower revenue neutral rate than previously approved. Budget and Finance Officer Tami Robison presented the final summary to the commission Thursday morning. The proposed fiscal 2022 budget totals $49.7 million, roughly $8.2 million more than the 2021 budget. It includes more than $487,000 in salary increases for Riley County employees and nearly $225,000 in funding for the Riley County Police Department. The National Bio Agro Defense Facility in Manhattan has several departments working against the spread of foreign animal disease outbreaks. Director of NBAF’s Biologics Development Module, Steve Witte, says that biologics development means they are not working on pharmaceuticals which would require chemical processes, but instead the department is working with biologics which is things like vaccines and antibody therapies. “We’re basically going to take the basic research being done at the USDA and turn it into applied science,” Witte says. Fort Riley officials have announced a temporary closure of the Parker Access Control Point starting Friday. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of November. The gate, which will close at 7 p.m. Friday, is located on the west edge of Fort Riley, and is formerly known as the Estes Gate. Officials say all other access control points remain open according to normal operating schedules. Construction continues on Henry Drive with traffic through the control point reduced to one lane inbound and outbound.
