KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police in Kansas City, Kansas, have identified a man shot to death and found in a grassy area under a tree. Police say the body of 19-year-old Johnnie Roades was discovered Tuesday evening by a person walking in the area about two hours after neighbors had reported hearing gunshots. Police have said they have no suspects yet in the case and are asking anyone with information on Roades’ death to contact detectives. Police say the killing was the city’s 30th homicide of the year.

COLBY, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Salina man has died in a two-vehicle crash on a western Kansas roadway. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 70 near Colby when a westbound car driven by 75-year-old Frank Herman briefly went off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed both westbound lanes and the median before colliding with an eastbound pickup truck. Investigators say Herman died at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 27-year-old woman from Breckenridge, Colorado, was seriously injured. Riley County Health Department officials confirmed two additional COVID-19 related deaths in the latest weekly report, bringing the total pandemic death toll for the county to 55. According to Wednesday’s report, one individual was a 32 year old woman who died 10 days after testing positive. Her vaccination status has not been verified. The other was a 66-year-old fully vaccinated man who died two weeks after testing positive. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) Fire officials in suburban Kansas City who responded to a condominium kitchen fire say a woman and her dog were found dead inside the unit. The fire occurred Tuesday afternoon, when Overland Park fire crews responded to a call around 3:20 p.m. of a fire along Outlook Drive. Overland Park Fire spokesman Jason Rhodes says arriving fighters found smoke coming from a two-story condo and quickly put out the kitchen fire. The woman was found dead in the front room of the home. Officials identified her as 51-year-old Julie Ann Peterson.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Only three of 16 projects financed with STAR bonds are meeting requirements for bringing visitors and spending to Kansas, and it could still take decades for them to return the tax revenue diverted for the bonds, according to a new state audit. Sales Tax and Revenue Bonds allow municipalities to issue bonds for developments, which are then supposed to pay off the bonds through sales tax revenue generated by bringing in tourists from other states to visit.
